want to build a clone if the reissue sounds
good? Well....aside from the fact that the
reissue is relatively expensive for a mass
produced pedal, it comes in a big funky
enclosure, and the obvious joy and
bragging rights you get from building your
own pedal, the Rat is the most amazing
circuit to modify. And the BYOC Mighty
Mouse Kit just happens to come with a few
of the coolest mods for the Rat circuit.

The 3-way toggle switch gives you
"vintage", "big boost", and "overdrive"
modes. "Vintage" of course gives you
original specs. "Big boost" lifts the clipping
diodes for a boost with an insane about of
volume. The "overdrive" mode isn't part of
the typical 3-way switch mod that some
pedal modifying companies will do to the
Rat. The "overdrive" mode involves a little
more circuit bending than just changing
the clipping diodes from 1N914's to LED's.
The "overdrive" mode gives the circuit a
completely different flavor from the regular
Rat with LEDs in the clipping section. The
kit also comes with the parts to build to
"turbo" specs instead of "vintage" and a
few other parts to tweak to taste."

kudos on building your own!

hmmm... i have an older Rat from the 80's which is my primary and a newer reissue, that i bought as a backup. the newer reissue to me sounds not nearly as good my older version which has better tone and its more versatile with adjustments to the filter and distortion knobs, on my reissue you get to a certain point (around 12 o'clock) where any more adjusting does nothing, plus it seems to be a tonesucker. so i'm not using the reissue, i'm undecided to either mod it or sell it as is. since my new backup to the 80's Rat is an EH Hot Tubes.

And to change the subject... I scooped up on what I think is a good find the other day for a nice price at a local music store as they didn't exactly know what they had, its a custom made fuzz unit made in 2004 by Subdecay Studios (at the time they were in Washington but now are in Oregon) i'm pretty sure its called "Birthday Fuzz" and only 25 of them were made. Its a precursor/prototype to their newer more elaborate fuzz called the Flying Tomato. They appear to make some interesting units like the Quasar phase shifting pedal which has alot of features more so than most phaseshifting pedals made today and looks to be more elaborate than the Mu-tron Phaser II

the birthday fuzz is pretty basic with no markings, and only volume and fuzz knobs but comes close to sounding like a bigmuff or even better and its also true-bypass:

Holy hell that Ludwig is expensive. The Birethday fuzz's look like diy pedals...

I wish a company would get permission to begin ludwig phase II production again, They are obviously wanted items.

king_buzzo 05.07.2007 12:54 PM

They'd be 300+ though.

Is it the new Hot Tubes with tubes or an old one without? My friend just got a newer one.

Its a newer one with the 12AX7 tubes, i got it used a few years ago and loaned it to a friend... just got it back since i liked it for the short time i used it.

keep in mind, the key thing to do in my opinion if you get one of these is to replace those those stock 12AX7 Electro Harmonix tubes... as to me they don't sound as good as Groove Tubes and i also tried a couple of older powerful Amperex and RCA tubes that i found that also make this sucker sing awesome tones. maybe i have some bad EHX tubes but when i put those back in they sounded really microphonic in this unit... and microphonic (shitty tubes) will make the Hot Tubes sound like complete crap.

yeah i agree about the Ludwig its definitly overpriced and i don't care if only a handful of them exist now, thats enough money for me to buy a decent car to last a good 5 years... and to me that ain't worth the price of a car.

i think i've seen one or two other Ludwigs on ebay go for $3,000 to $4,000... not almost $9000 and this is not even perfect w/ a spliced power cable, and missing slider knobs otherwise its pretty sweet.

It would be nice but unlikely for a company to pick up on reissuing the Ludwig, as i think it would send the company into bankruptcy as the cost to make a unit like that would surely outweigh the profit to be made on this. not many people could afford a unit like this nowadays which uses hard to find parts/components and labor these days... my guess is that a unit like this if it were remade would surely cost at least $1500-$2500.

It seems like to me that the Birthday fuzz was initially a DIY project that spawned into the Subdecay product line.

king_buzzo 05.08.2007 03:57 AM

Yeah, if you were to get one, might as well get the original version and sell it 10 years later for double.

king_buzzo 05.09.2007 01:46 AM

Buuump.

king_buzzo 05.09.2007 01:55 AM
