After I downloaded this show myself, I noticed that I also have a b&w video from the pre-concert rehearsal for the show that had occurred on the night previous in Stockholm, Sweden.
This is from FM broadcast and the sound is excellent and crystal clear on this one.
The show starts with Mingus talking about being arrested for shoplifting earlier in the day. The first set starts minus Jaki Byard who was still in police custody*, but he arrives shortly thereafter. Mingus explains that the arrests were due to a misunderstanding. He and Jaki had paid the clerk, but unknowingly with the incorrect amount, and as they were on the sidewalk outside, they were confronted by a policeman.

Charles Mingus: bass
Eric Dolphy: alto sax, flute, bass clarinet
Clifford Jordan: tenor sax
Johnny Coles: trumpet
Jaki Byard: piano
Dannie Richmond: drums

Disc 1 (early set)
1. intro 6:28
2. So Long, Eric 19:13
3. intro 1:47
4. AT FW USA 4:11
5. intro 1:33
6. Orange Was the Color Of Her Dress, Then Blue Silk 15:12
7. Meditations 22:21

Disc 2 (late set)
1. intro 0:46
2. Ow! 25:36
3. Fables Of Faubus 36:43

TT 134:11

Rythym & Blues type fans should know that a completely brilliant RL Burnside show (live at the Double Decker Festival, 2000) has just been put up for download at Pathway to Unknown Worlds (2nd link down).

atari 2600 03.01.2007 05:34 PM

Marvelous tip, Hip; good lookin' out. I'm getting this now, I've got my track info file saved, and am going to listen to it straightaway.

Hip Priest 03.01.2007 05:47 PM

You'll find the vocals almost inaudible for the first minute or so, but don't worry; from then on its sorted. This isn't my usual type of listening, but there's no point ignoring genius.

Hey, thanks for the listening testimonial.
I like the no waiting period on the zshare.net site that the blogger uses. There's some ads though...hmm, this zshare is perfect for bloggers.

Hmmm, I'd say Black One era would be cool.

I used to have the cd. Then I had a really lossy copy. Eventually got one that sounds okay and I wonder how this one is. At 44 Mb, I guess it's equivalent to what I have. Pardon me, thinking outloud.

This is pretty good.

especially:
1. Just Another Victim - Helmet/House Of Pain
7. I Love You Mary Jane - Sonic Youth/Cypress Hill
8. Freak Momma - Mudhoney/Sir Mix-A-Lot

I like some of the other artists, but these three are the only remarkable ones as I remember.

Anyone want Pixies radio broadcast? It was recorded in December 1986, I think it might be they're first radio broacast? because Kim plugs their show at the Bat Cave and that was like their 2nd or 3rd show ever? It's very very good quality.

Tokolosh 03.01.2007 09:45 PM

That Charles Mingus Quartet* & Quintet in Copenhagen, Denmark is brilliant! Thanks again atari.

WOW! the sound quality is quite amazing considering all the other live recordings i heard of DNA, where did this come from and i wonder why these some of these tracks don't appear on "DNA on DNA"...

atari 2600 03.02.2007 11:34 AM

I need to listen to that.

If anyone's wondering why I named it Quartet & Quintet (instead of quintet and sextet), it's because
Johnny Coles appears on trumpet, but he was recruited by Mingus only for this 1964 European tour, so he wasn't really a band member.

re: dna show.

it's astounishing the sound quality on that one, considering is one of the earlier dna shows in circulation and that it was a show hosted in a motherfucking basement!! if i get enough enthusiasm, i'll post the contortions set from the same night.
