I sort of hate the 2nd half of Surfer Rosa. All the songs on the 2nd half just feel out of place. I think it should have been an 9 song album. Tony's Theme, Brick is Red, and I'm Amazed should be B-sides on singles. Oh My Golly is a good song, but just doesn't fit.

ZEROpumpkins 11.23.2007 06:03 AM

I like Brick is Red, though I think that after Cactus it isn't as good of an album. Doolittle is more even I think.

i also love total trash
and tv party
i never really liked toadies on Double Nickels on the Dime

gualbert 11.23.2007 09:05 AM

"Total trash" is rather poor ( there's just one riff in this song , right? )
Yet , I don't hate it or dislike it or skip it when I listen DN.

I love that song.

"Maybe These Boys" is a total black spot on Remote Luxury by The Church.
"Changes" on Black Sabbath Volume 4 is the biggest offender though.
Way to ruin a perfect album, guys.

h8kurdt 11.23.2007 10:10 AM

What the hell? Changes is a good song! Maybe it's because it appeals to the sappy side in me.

Songs that ruin good albums.

All Sonic Youth albums have 1 song that ruins the rest.

There's more but I can't think of any.

batreleaser 11.23.2007 10:15 AM

But how does one song ruin the rest of the songs? It might be a flaw in the album but it hardly ruins the rest of it. Like you can't listen to the other songs anymore because of the one song that's bad?

Savage Clone 11.23.2007 11:34 AM

I didn't say it ruined all the other songs.
I said the album would have been 100% gold if it weren't for that blemish.
Just because you miss the last strike in a perfect bowling game doesn't mean you didn't throw a bunch of other strikes; it just means you didn't have a perfect game.

It doesn't. I've no idea why I wrote that one. Either way SY always have a song that really isn't good/

But you cut everything after Cactus and put those song on their own EP, and Surfer Rosa would be the best Pixies album. The tapering off kind of kills it.

I agree with specific albums, but there have been albums that totally ruin a band for me... ie; "Smashing Pumpkins"* new piece of turd that I haven't even heard, but the two songs make me vahm... and The Mars Volta's Amputechture... Scab Dates started the shittyness... and it grew to such a peak... oh man.
Weirdly... I was listening to Siamese Dream this morning, and I just bought the Tremulant 12"EP...
*hardly...

There are so many crappy songs on albums that stick out like a sore thumb that I adore,

Smashing Pumpkins - We Only Come Out at Night
Sonic Youth - Panty Lies (the harmonics are sick, the drumming is amazing too, its got a great creepy vibe)
Pavement - Serpentine Pad

as for bad ones:

Modest Mouse has plenty of fucking garbage on all their albums..
My bloody valentine - I Only Said

but, the quintessential bad song on amazing album is:
pavement - hit the plane down.

SuperCreep 11.23.2007 04:50 PM

A few off the top of my head:

The Beatles - When I'm Sixty-Four (This song has always been too much on the hokey side for my liking.)
The Cure - Screw (The Head on the Door would be perfect if it weren't for this one.)
Elliott Smith - Cupid's Trick (The verses are fine, but the chorus is godawful. This song feels a bit out of place on the album.)

SpectralJulianIsNotDead 11.23.2007 05:22 PM

Serpentine Pad is an excellent song. I find Wowee Zowee perfect from start to finish.

ZEROpumpkins 11.23.2007 05:24 PM

Agreed, Wowee Zowee is the best Pavement album. Serpentine pad is one of my favourites, and I have to say I never skip a song on that album.

5Against1 11.23.2007 05:33 PM

I've always felt that Wild Horses just totally killed Sticky Fingers. Oceans didn't really seem to fit Ten either. Lots of albums have the obligatory "slow" tune that ruins the tempo.

ZEROpumpkins 11.23.2007 05:53 PM

I like all of ten, never skip a song on that either.

Bertrand 11.24.2007 04:49 AM

Dans mes bras, on Adrienne Pauly's album.
She rocks live, her texts are brilliant, but that one has nothing to do there!
She didn't sing it when I saw her (French speaking boardies, she made me believe in French rock with French lyrics again!)

sound_world 11.24.2007 05:19 AM

From Bad moon Rising

Justice is might
echo canyon (altho it was called untitled on my album that i got)
Ghost bitch

I haven't really checked her out, but she's strongly influenced by Brigitte Fontaine isn't she ?

Norma J 11.24.2007 07:39 AM

I can't think of any.

It never came to my mind.
A girl I knew saw her before me and mentioned Catherine Ringer, which I thought odd. Still, when she took the stage and moved, that connection clicked.
She pays attention to both lyrics and music - one thing many French artists don't do, being less demanding on their music (less than me).

Her musicians are quite quite good: Alice Boté, from Jad Wio and Fred Poulet, nearly drove me nuts, and Michael Garçon too, from AS Dragon (who could provide what the Valentins gave to Brigitte Fontaine, a poppy aspect).
She's funny in between songs, and likes at time to hit her head with a tambourine with a grin on her face, as if she was a bit mental. That's the sole other connection I could find with Brigitte Fontaine, who played with that image; a bit far-fetched.

I bought her album after seeing her live twice recently. She rocks a lot / kicks ass (typing that : a dream come true) / and covers Gainsbourg with tons of joy and energy.

She'll probably be recording a new album early 2008.
She's toured a lot, even played in my town, a thing noone interesting had ever done (well, from my window the day after, I heard Superbus covering Youth Against Fascism).
Expect her to be less than 50 kms of your hometown next year.

PAULYBEE2656 11.24.2007 10:39 AM

Take 'People Are Strange' off Strange Days and swap it with 'The Unknown Soldier' on Waiting For The Sun.

Actually, it's kind of odd that these numbers wound up where they are in the first place, considering that just about everything on the first three Doors albums was written in the same 1965-'66 era, thereby giving the band lots of time and objectivity to get the LPs' running orders in perfect sync.

acousticrock87 08.12.2008 05:31 PM

The opening track on Boredom's Pop Tatari ("Noise Ramones"). It's so obnoxious, I had to delete it from iTunes just to avoid the temptation of playing it, or the risk of it coming up on shuffle.

So annoying that I ressurected this thread because of it.

Seriously. I hate this track. It ruins the whole CD.

Plastic Sun

Green Magnesium 08.12.2008 11:41 PM

I don't "hate" it... but Eric's Trip is my least favorite song on Daydream Nation and probably my least favorite Lee song. I don't know why they're prone to whipping it out live so often.

I'm quite happy that between the two times I've seen them live, Lee performed 3 songs and none of them were Eric's Trip.

acousticrock87 08.12.2008 11:57 PM

I've never seen SY not play Eric's Trip.

deflinus 08.12.2008 11:59 PM

That's how I felt about Pink Cellphone on the newest one, but now I like it. I like Teenager, though.

Actually, I hate Passenger on White Pony. I don't mind Maynard, but he sings the whole fucking song. I don't want to listen to Tool when I'm not listening to Tool.

viewtiful_alan 08.13.2008 12:11 AM

Olympia on Live Through This

Creme Brulee on Dirty

Spread Eagle Beagle on Houdini.
