i have been to many such gigs and have done that, many people have and we all knew that it would be loud before. i am not a snob as i enjoy this music.

the sort of person who goes to gigs that i dont want to see is the people who tell me not too.

then how can you hear the music accurately?

earplugs that are built for music are made in a way that they don't muffle the sound and you can actually hear the notes in reduced volume form; fingers don't do that.

so, chances are you don't actually listen to the music when you're at a gig.

I'd have to agree that this would be a good time for earplugs. although *I* might be laughing to myself at your expense, you aren't sending a non-verbal signal that says "I can't take the way this sounds" to everyone around you.

while I find earplugs to be for sissies, I think that putting fingers in your ears is just plain rude.

then again, until the suede-denim-secret-police start enforcing these "rules", you'll be safe from any serious prison time.

standing in a room full of microphone feedback without earplugs is somewhat daunting.

i dont stand with my fingers in my ears for the whole set but if its exceedingly loud then just about everyone does. i have damaged my hearing through going to gigs. infact i know someone who at age 23 has been told not to expose his ears to so anymore loud noises as he has seriously damaged it.

loud PA + feedback squeels can be pretty nasty at times. I think that this is a lot different than standing with your fingers in your ears for the entire show.

during those moments who cares what the music snobs standing next you think; you sure as hell aren't going to hear their derisive laughter. :p

that's right. it's best to sneak up behind them & smash a bottle of beer on their heads.


man you clearly have never been right next to the stage at a 16 bitch pileup gig--those "16 bitches" violated my ear drums as if with icepicks-- the pain lasted a while and they rang for 3 days. i'd rather be a sissy than deaf. i'm for earplugs all the way. and fingers when nothing else. it's just like... covering your balls if you're in the barrier during a free kick...

my ears rang for a full 10 days after Ministry's Mind is a Terrible Thing to Taste tour (to this day, this is the loudest noise I've ever heard).:p

Sorry. But I come from a family that isn't really that well known for good hearing. But then again, that's my moms side. My dads side however....let me put it this way, my grandad is 97 and he can hear perfectly.

If you happen to meet the band (opening or headlining) never say anything negative about them or their performance (unless they were REALLY crappy).

Another thing, if you see a guy wearing a band shirt (for any band) who looks the same age as the band members, talk to them, they might be a friend of the band you're seeing. I say that from personal experience.

and you're right to be-- i knew this guy was in a band he was in his 30s i think he couldn't hear out of his left ear. put on those earplugs!

actually there are hifi earplugs especially designed for music, ive never seen them though.

my brother drums, and he has special earplugs (made especially for his ears) just so his hearing won't get too bad (it wasn't that good anymore, and he's only twelve.) i'm a bit paranoid about my ears too, try to avoid those earphones you put inside your ears and never play my music too loud. just so i'll be able to still enjoy the music and sounds of the world when i'm old and grey :)

Looks like I'll have to invest in a pair of decent earplugs sooner rather than later, if I want to avoid myself ending up as deaf as Ludwig van B.

No matter how loud a show, people will still shout to their friends to make themselves heard. When you're at a concert and want to just enjoy the music, you're likely to stand further back, and that's where the talkers (they're called "Geese" on another forum I post on) always are.

and dont dance into me. many a gig has been ruined by people pushing in and insisting on getting to the front. i understand at big places where you have to move but in small pubs/clubs there is no need.

Also, regarding talking/alien anal: you'd be surprised how many people are talking during loud shows... or during the quiet parts of loud shows. I've been annoyed with crowd conversations recently during Dream/Aktion Unit and Burial Chamber Trio (a Sunn O))) spin-off for fuck sake!) and they were definitely loud shows for the most part.
