that's a pain in the ass though.

Yeah... but then I think about Tom Morello, and how he simulates turntable scratching by rubbing his left hand on the strings and flicking the toggle switch with his right hand... That sounds like a pain to me too...
(You can hear that effect on 'Bulls On Parade') |
i think i may have seen him on some show on VH1 about the 90s or 80s or something.

Yeah, Daniel Johns from Silverchair uses one of those in the song 'Too Much of Not Enough'. They sound pretty neat. |
That's the daddy, eh ? i just thought he was just shredding on a couple strings .

I can play One Note Samba...kinda. Can't figure out all the notes, though.

Well, let's see...been playing guitar around 6 or 7 years now...actually I learned the basics when I was 12 but didn't really start playing much until I was 17...I can play:
-Smells Like Teen Spirit, In Bloom (except the lead break), Come As You Are, Drain You, Sliver, Aneurysm, and the main riff to Aero Zeppelin by Nirvana -Cherub Rock by the Smashing Pumpkins (not note for note, but pretty close) -When I Come Around by Green Day -10:15 Saturday Nght, A Forest, Play For Today, and One Hundered Years by the Cure -She's So High and Song 2 by Blur -Duel by Swervedriver -Creep, Fake Plastic Trees, and Just by Radiohead -Get Free, Outtathaway, and Ride by the Vines -Bohemian Like You and Godless by the Dandy Warhols -Mildred Pierce by Sonic Youth (I don't like to mess around too much with tuning) -Paranoid by Black Sabbath -Just Like Honey by the Jesus and Mary Chain -Tomorrow by Silverchair I know I know more but I don't feel like listing them right now... |

nirvana is the easiest shit to learn when you're starting off. most of the songs are only 3 or 4 chords and maybe a cheeseball solo here and there. i don't know any hole to judge. |
When I first started playing guitar I would learn a few licks from songs. My Dad started calling me the sample man because I couldn't play full songs. I think that has something to do with me always learning and writting songs now.
My favorites lately have been Dinosaur Jr.-Bulbs of Passion Dinosaur Jr.-Kracked Dinosaur Jr.-The Lung Dinosaur Jr.-Does it Float Black Flag-In My Head Black Flag-Drinking and Driving Black Flag-Modern Man Black Flag-Slip It In Minutemen-Little Man With A Gun In His Hand Faith No More-Suprise! You're Dead! X-Nausea CKY-Testing Jawbreaker-Housesitter Plus all of my songs and some random others |
A shit load, but I play drums so......

I cover merzbow a lot.

I have not really played other artist's songs for years. When I have done a cover, it is normally a different take than the original.
When I was just starting out guitar player and guitar magazine helped me learn all the 90s alternative essentials on guitar (pj, nirvana, stp, soundgarden, pumpkins, weezer, etc) but i also had big classic rock influence by learning all the led zepplin I -III from front to back on bass, pink floyd, beatles, hendrix catalog (on bass), neil young, bowie. I also knew the whole pumpkin catalog pretty decent, same for pj. But then I went to college, and that is a different chapter in this story. Like others said, I prefer creating my own stuff to play. I guess that is why I am in a original band? I do think for the newbie musicians, learning songs is a great way to develop yourself technically and stylisticly. For me, it helped me develop the writing style I use today. Ultimately, I think what really makes you strong is playing with other people as a musican because it is a different ball game from playing along with a song. As for Ebows, I do love them. Yes the sound can be replicated, but it still is not an Ebow. I have been playing bass for about 11 years and guitar for 10. I would consider myself a decent bass player and just an ok guitar player. |

Not that anybody cares, but there was an ebow thread a long time ago and I zipped three old tunes from three bands I've played in where I went into ebow overindulgence.
I still had the file, so I upped it again given the ebow discussion here... Enjoy or not. http://www.badongo.com/file/1286006 |
Thanks, Savage Clone for the files... I'll give it a listen... :)

Boring songs. I'm mostly into electronic instruments and sampling.
