The Offspring has pulled off an interesting feat with me. Their latter day albums have sucked so bad, that they've actually negatively affected the way I hear their early albums.

pop punk is to one man offspring and bad religion..to another its mass of the fermenting dregs and buzzcocks

to me pop punk is anything upbeat poppy and punky..sorry to be obvious!!! going by that wikipedia list....ramones, buzzcocks and undertones are high on my chart....jimmyeatworld and green day and the offspring are not..they are just shite.... opinions people!

yes to Circle Jerks!

So far,
Dead Milkmen
Circle Jerks
Bad Religion (recipe for hate?)
AFI
Descendents
Screeching Weasel
and I know they aren't ''pop-punk'' but I can't help thinking of Social Distortion

demonrail666 06.19.2009 10:16 AM

I always thought Punk was a return to pop values after the Rockism of Prog etc anyway. The Ramones and The Buzzcocks adored Pop while The Sex Pistols unashamedly targeted the singles chart and the pop media while even covering The Monkees. The only difference between their brand of Pop-Punk and today's is that bands like Green Day do all they can to deny what they are.

Shifty Prophet 06.19.2009 10:18 AM

I've been trying to articulate that^ to a lot of people, without success, for quite some time.

This one is bad.
I want to sell it for a long time, but no second-hand record store ever wanted it (even in the pre file-sharing area)

Rob Instigator 06.19.2009 10:23 AM

the OG punks were NOT returning to pop. fuck pop. they were treturning to original ROCK N ROLL, chuck berry riffs, etc.

fuck pop

_slavo_ 06.19.2009 10:23 AM

I always thought the ''pop'' of that album made it sound bad, but the guy wanted pop sounding punk recommendations.

right you are sir, I remeber reading tons of interviews with 70's new york folk that jsut wanted to sound like the first beatles record and chuck berry. (which ironically, were both hugely ''pop''ular, while still sounding very rock.)

Rob Instigator 06.19.2009 10:28 AM

twas ROCK.

pop is for sinatra/standards/balladeers/britney spears/titney rears.

Shifty Prophet 06.19.2009 10:30 AM

I know, I know. I was just illustrating how rock became popular, hence being categorized as ''pop'', even though ''pop'' is typically identified as you have pointed out by a sound. Much the same with the term ''indie''. In the beginning most indie bands did not sound alike, but nowadays, ''indie'' has become an identifying sound.

yeah I'm not sure what to include here...

maybe...

The Vandals - When In Rome Do As The Vandals
Guns n' Wankers - For Dancing and Listening (I love this fucking album)

my brain is slowly dying in the heat. I'll try to think of more than two later...

atsonicpark 06.19.2009 10:48 AM

I fucking love Bad Religion up to Recipe for Hate.. which only has like 2 good songs on it (the title track and "skyskraper"). everything before that is gold. I wouldn't call em pop punk for the most part but, strangely, they probably have some of the best vocal harmonies of any band...

Rob Instigator 06.19.2009 10:52 AM

i never liked gorilla biscuits
