true as far as i know (via a friend who works @ starbucks).
|
well, here's to hoping that's it a joke ;)
we'll just have to wait for the rest of the interview at pitchfork this monday to see if he actually dismissed the idea later in the conversation... pretty hairy by the 'forkers to put this up as a news story if thurston was just joking though, right? still, the indie godfathers on starbucks? geez. but what about the celebs doing SY songs? i mean, why? if they got some nice indie bands to do covers that'd be one thing. i just don't see the motivation for this disc in the first place. if SY got a song they'd like to put out somewhere, put it on a 7". |
next thing you know, akon is going to guest on their next album.

it's their songs, not covers and you know, Starbucks' Hear music label is an INDEPENDENT label, it's not under control from Universal, EMI, Warner or Sony BMG, i don't get the sell-out label anyways, it's a rather pompous tag to label someone like Sonic Youth whose credentials are quite intact |
shut up!!!!!! they suck now!!!! i still liked them a couple of days ago...i can't....i can't go on...talking
*runs away crying* seriously though, this thread is hilarious, between the people who are truly disappointed at this and the ones who are getting all ultra fan boys saying how awesome it is that this record is happening...pure gold!!! sy disc on starbucks is the new against the grain pedo conspiracy thread. |

Who cares if their music is sold at Starbucks. If they sold their songs to TV commercials that would compromise the music (can anyone listen to Led Zepplin's "Rock n' Roll" without cringing now?); but allowing people to buy a CD when they walk into a coffee shop isn't a big deal. Sometimes I wonder whether people on this board actually like SY's music or just think that it's cool to say they like them.
|
fuck off
|
actually, you are right, i like sonic youth not because of the music, since i rarely listen to them, but because i want to be cool.
funny thing to do with this thread, instead of the whole starbucks thing think sy decided to invade irak or some other country, then read the posts. laughs are a given! |
sonic youth fans are the koolest people out there man!
|
Nah, he made a good point. The way people are reacting to this is like the starbucks affilation will tarnish SY's cool image or whatever.

I dont really mind about the "sellout" debate (though i maintain i believe this story is some kind of elaborate joke, possibly because the band are a bit bored from not recording new music), i dont care how people discover something, all that matters is whether their passion is genuine. And if it isnt, they themselves will realise it in the end, they dont need others to point it out.

Hardly a "coffee shop". It's a fucking corporation. It ruins small, independently owned businesses. And not to mention the coffee is fucking horrible. |
By the way, I really hope this is a joke...
|
Well irrespective of jokez, its their decision to make. We owe them, they dont owe us. So as long as it doesnt result in pandering and a reduction in quality of output the economic ethics and the choices made are down to them.
And as ive said, i hate chain coffee shops like Starbucks. But the most effective action one can take is just not going there. |
i tried to convince them not to do it, i was like guys its a bad idea, but they just said "hey mark you're not even a proper member of this band".

i'd shell out $15 bucks for that. especially if he goes on tour with them and humps thurston like he did that 14 year old girl. but really, so what if they put out a record to be sold at starbucks? hoes gotta eat too. |
the band have more than enough money, trust me. they just decided this year to sell out in a big way.
