I don't think any movie with Scorsese directing is going to be controversial choice.

Hell, some people pretend that Shitter Island is good..

But yeah, Cape Fear remake is entertaining as hell. Joe Don Baker!

Insomnia (the Pacino/Nolan one; remake of a great film but still being really good, not better though)
The Thing
Ransom
12 Monkeys (a good version of La Jaettee)
The Departed
Ocean's 11
Heat (!!!!!!!!!!!! this is L.A. Takedown, everyone)
Man Who Knew Too Much
Vanilla Sky
Cape FEar
Fatal Attraction
Funny Games
The Ring (which I don't like, but it's leagues better than Ringu!)
Fistful of Dollars (Yojimbo!)
Point Blank
Night of the Living Dead (Savini's)

Quoting myself since we're on a new page.

Feel free to add to this list.

well I just think the original Cape Fear is so stellar, Bob Mitchum can't be topped. But I'm cool with Scorsese's take.

Ben Hur is a good remake, at the very least as good as the original.

demonrail666 07.16.2010 04:15 AM

I thought the Dawn of the Dead remake was good. Not as good as the original but far better than I expected.

Rob Instigator 07.16.2010 09:22 AM

Scarface - "remake" has nearly nothing to do with original
The Fly*
The Blob*
Dangerous Liasons
Little Shop of Horrors*
The Thing*
*all these are remakes of very old movies, most B+W. I do not mind remakes of those. technology has improved to make a better horror film.
Ransom
12 Monkeys (a good version of La Jaettee)
The Departed - thought the remake sucked.
Ocean's 11 - original and remake SUCK. so fucking boring.
Heat - never knew it was a remake. Heat was middling for me. pointless crime crap.

Vanilla Sky - better than the original?
Cape FEar - did not like remake.

Night of the Living Dead - original is SEMINAL man.

M.A.S.H is perfect should never be remade either the movie or the TV series.
Young Frankenstein another perfect movie.
On the Waterfront & A Streetcar Named Desire. although I think they might have done a remake of streetcar?

WHAT?!

...Hhahaa.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.

Sorry. Just... okay. I really.. okay, let me start over.. everyone's entitled to their opinion. But, seriously... You really think DEEP COVER is better than HEAT and CASINO? Really?! Okay!

....For the record, I think Heat is one of the best films ever made; definitely one of the most engaging films ever, the loooooong bank heist scene is MINDBLOWING, one of the best scenes in any movie EVER. Probably my favorite crime movie ever, with TO LIVE AND DIE IN L.A. maybe being a bit better but eh.

viewtiful alan redux 07.17.2010 01:22 PM

I'm just glad hollywood never tried to make an americanized remake of either the killer or hardboiled..

I love HEAT and it was a major influence on THE DARK KNIGHT, which I still think is a BRILLIANT film, about a super hero or not...now that the hype has died down....it's still great.

UGH.

That would be the WORST.

THE KILLER... STARRING CHRISTIAN BALE.

Oh god!

chicka 07.17.2010 02:04 PM

The bank heist in Heat was stolen from a real life LA bank robbery where the guys were covered with bullet-proof clothing head to toe and high powered rifles. The real life battle was somewhere around 20 minutes.

You can't say some of the gunfighting in The Matrix wasn't at least partially inspired by John Woo, if nothing else.

A Videodrome remake wouldn't work in this day and age because there's nowhere's near as much fear surrounding the effects of television as there was in the early 80s. Plus, the philosophy behind controlling someone via a videotape would be different than controlling someone with a DVD or BluRay disc due to the way they work; a videotape is linear, so it would give them a single task to complete, but optical media allows you more freedom in that you can watch individual parts or the whole feature. So in theory, a disc wouldn't brainwash someone as much.

atsonicpark 07.20.2010 12:42 AM

Sure, but John Woo inspired, like, everything. He's probably the greatest action director of all time, really, even though he hasn't made a good film in like 13 years.

Yeah that's the way you and I would think of it, but this is Hollywood we're talking about.
