Haha, I've totally done that. I'm still "working" on 2014's list.

I should give up. I've had the top 15 or so down since January, but there were over 120 albums I wanted to include.

It's just not possible for one person to retain enough relevant information about that many different records to place them in definitive order from best to worst. Hmm... Should #67 be Who the fuck Cares, Nobody that's who? Or should I give that spot to What The Fuck Severian, This is like the Black Alchemy of Statistics, go outside or something!

Arghhh! Tough caaaalll!!!

In other words, I'm done with massive fucking lists.

Vince's album is receiving critical acclaim. only 2nd to To Pimp a Butterfly as far as 2015 goes so far.

Kendrick's performance at the BET Awards had FOX News shook:
Quote:

During the BET Awards, Kendrick Lamar performed his To Pimp a Butterfly track "Alright" while standing on a vandalized police car. The performance was a talking point on the latest episode of the Fox News roundtable program "The Five", Stereogum reports. In short, the pundits were not fans of Lamar's lyrics or imagery, claiming his performance "incites violence". "This is why I say that hip-hop has done more damage to young African Americans than racism in recent years," said Geraldo Rivera.

Also worth noting—Eric Bolling's reading of the "wanna kill us dead in the street fo sho" line is extremely funny.

Rivera continued:

"This is exactly the wrong message. And then to conflate what happened in the church in Charleston, South Carolina with these tragic incidents involving excessive use of force by cops is to equate that racist killer with these cops, it is so wrong, it is so counterproductive, it gives exactly the wrong the message."

I'm kind of bummed about Iggy. Honestly I loved New Classic. I felt like she had so much promise. Then, by the end of the year she re-released the album in butchered form and has now seemed ok w/ relegating herself to being a one trick pony. Have y'all heard "Pretty Girls"? That shit's horrible. Like... I don't know who sabotaged who, but Iggy & Britney made the worst song of the year. But it is really a bummer. I mean, listen to the emotion she put into something like "Rolex," and then wonder how she got here.

ANYWAY - this new Vince Staples is OMG good. Like, same tier as Mr. Wonderful and B4DA$$ on first listen. Which is to say, really really f'ing great, but it's not At.Long.Last.A$AP for me. But, wow. So good. Like multiple times I caught myself w/ eyes wide open, jaw dropped, goosebumps just hanging off every word the dude dropped.

totally. like i don't think i even knew he was capable of making something like "Summertime" (the song). i expected a great album and got exactly what i wanted plus a little more.

yeah, like I thought Hell Can Wait was excellent. But listening to this I'm like "ok, this dude really understands the album format" like how the whole thing feels like two definitive halves. And it flows so well. It's like a well-paced movie or something. Keeps you on the edge of yr seat.

louder 07.01.2015 12:36 PM

noisereductions 07.01.2015 02:07 PM

I know I been saying this enough, but GD 2015 is an amazing year for hip hop. It's been a challenge just keeping up w/ everything dropping.

July 10th is TWELVE REASONS VOL II

1. Powerful One
2. Return Of the Savage (feat. Raekwon and RZA)
3. King Of New York (feat. Raekwon)
4. Rise Up (feat. Scarub)
5. Daily News
6. Get The Money (feat. Vince Staples)
7. Death's Invitation (Interlude feat. RZA)
8. Death's Invitation (feat. Scarub, Lyrics Born and Chino XL)
9. Let The Record Spin (Interlude feat. RZA)
10. Let The Record Spin (feat. Raekwon)
11. Blackout (feat. Raekwon)
12. Resurrection Morning (feat. Raekwon and Bilal)
13. Life's A Rebirth (feat. RZA)

louder 07.01.2015 02:13 PM

yeah, the "Free Weezy Album" supposedly drops next week too.

Severian 07.01.2015 03:15 PM

I'm sorry I ever talked up Iggy Azalea, you guys. She's such an unfortunate thing. I just... I just don't have words.

I've gotta get my hands on Summertime '06, I suppose.

Severian 07.01.2015 03:26 PM

Which, it's a fucking double album?! Wwwwhat?!

noisereductions 07.01.2015 03:27 PM

but I don't think it's "wrong" to have liked The New Classic. It was a good album. It felt interesting. She seemed to have potential... it's just that since she dropped that album she's let the potential go unrealized.

But yes, you DO need Summer 06. It's for real. A defining album of 2015.

My new top of the TOP of 2015 as of the first day of the second half of the year:

A$AP Rocky - At.Long.Last.A$AP
Vince Staples - Summertime 06
Action Bronson - Mr. Wonderful
Joey Bada$$ - B4DA$$
Drake - If You're Reading This It's Too Late
Ghostface Killah - Sour Soul
The Alchemist & Oh No - Welcome To Los Santos

Summertime 06 feels like a part of this new crop of West Coast classics we've seen like Good Kid Maad City, My Krazy Life, etc.

EDIT: A double album.... that could fit on 1CD. It's under 60 mins. it's more a double album for art's sake. To make it clear that it's meant to be heard as two 10-song cycles. The 2 physical discs create more a side-A/side-B feel.

Haha I remember you bigged up her album so much I decided to check it out mfw  Awful, just awful. Although, to be fair, it's probably the only time I've thought you were way off on a recommendation.

This sums up how awful she is...

Kendrick vs. Iggy

Hey, y'know, pickins was slim in February of 2014. I pretty much responded with elation to the album because it felt like a left-field, underdog novelty that actually had some substance to it. A fun irony album, you know?

At the time, I remember thinking "this bangs generically, but at least it bangs". Also, Iggy didn't seem concerned about whether or not she "sounded black", and I'm always happy when a white rapper can overcome "Eminem Syndrome:" an obsessive anxiety disorder that causes white rappers to freak out about what African Americans may think of their authenticity, resulting in the affectation of a totally artificial cadence that sounds totally goddamn stupid.

But yeah, it was a bad call.
I wasn't the only one though!

Severian 07.01.2015 07:12 PM

Holy Fuck.

Summertime '06 is fucking incredible!!!! It's ...

Damn.. It's so much more mature and powerful than what I was expecting! Hell Can Wait definitely blew my socks off, but this album is unquestionably a masterpiece in both subtlety and hard directness....

I have the iTunes version, it's all I could get on short notice. I bought t without consideration, so who is responsible for this exquisite production? Who's behind the boards here? Are there ANY weak tracks?

This feels like Good kid mAAd city. This is fucking epic!

Severian 07.01.2015 07:18 PM

Iggy looks like a bag of sand.

I don't think she's had any (more) plastic surgery. She's always looked fucked up to me. I think it's just an issue of makeup application. She looks a little hydrocephalic in the bottom. And her hair doesn't look real.

She actually kind of resembles Niki Minaj to me, only Niki is obviously a beautiful girl, and Iggy is obviously something else entirely.

Neither of them satisfy much in the music department. I really miss Lauren Hill. Niki's never made a good album. Her early verses were insane but she has become a joke.

Lauryn Hill needs to bring the fire back. I loved that really hard single she dropped right before she went to jail.

Makes sense. I'm a big fan of both.

DAMN though I am fucking excited about this shit! The album is so atmospheric and eerie, production wise. I'm a sucker for that stuff.

I read somewhere today that Vince was the Second Coming of (old, good) Ice cube, but I'm not feeling it. To me it's in a similar sonic vein to MNIMN, only with a lyrical narrative that's in the tradition of good kid and My Krazy Life... With something totally fresh and unique rolled up in it all.

I'm stunned, gentlemen!

noisereductions 07.02.2015 07:18 AM

yeah I'm just so impressed. Like you, thought Hell Can Wait was great. But this. THIS! Wow.

In some ways I feel like Kendrick raised the bar and threw down the gauntlet. It makes sense that TPAB can't be the best album this year. He challenged everyone to come at him bro.

And the winner? All of us hip hop fans.

word. i'm gonna say it again; Meek stepped it up too, his album is fire. i wasn't even feeling his first one apart from the intro, so i didn't see it coming at all. if i had to describe it, i'd say that musically it's basically a Rick Ross album, except the rapping is more hood and soulful.

noisereductions 07.02.2015 09:04 AM

yeah I saw you mention that Meek. I've had no interest in him prior. I mean, I'll check it out on yr recommendation... but prob not soon. Honestly, too much good music right now. Like w/ Rocky, Bronson, Joey and Vince out, PLUS some others I'm still enjoying like CanOx, Czarface, Welcome To Los Santos... not to mention the Ghostface - OH and another Ghostface coming next week... it's like, how do you have time to keep listening to the stuff you already like right now AND find time to hear new stuff AND listen to some old classics? There's just enough hrs in days haha.

'it's been a good year/maybe i should buy a blimp"

louder, you should check out the track "20's, 50's, 100's" from Welcome To Los Santos. Starts w/ a sick Ferg verse then goes into some legit R&B. Beat's nice.

Severian 07.02.2015 02:48 PM

NR : I'm enjoying the Welcome to Los Santos comp as well. It's got a hell of a cast of characters.

word. I feel like it's pretty below the radar, but it's an interesting mix of shit that gels really well. The hours I spent playing the PC port of GTA V probably gives it a little extra something I suppose, but it's really good a good cohesive vibe. I feel like it'll actually get kicked up to even more constant rotation for me as the Summer gets hotter over here.

noisereductions 07.02.2015 11:04 PM

"Summertime" (the song) is unreal. Serious goosebumps. It's so tragic. So heartfelt. So amazing. I think Vince has a shot at album of the year.

I always have doubts bro. Remember in the days before Yeezus leaked, I was full of panic that it would somehow fall short?

I was harboring the same doubts about this new Kanye album, until you mentioned that he was taking his time on purpose because he wanted the album to be at MBDTF's level? I'm sure I'll go back into Doubtland if much more time goes by without any goddamn news, but for now, you've restored my confidence.

I don't actually remember what I found doubtful about Vince's album in theory, but I STILL can't believe that it's as good as it is. So in a sense I'm doubting my feelings and perceptions. Because ... Come on... Who saw THIS coming?

noisereductions 07.03.2015 06:23 PM

i think it was the only way he could release it because he's still under contract with Birdman/Cash Money.

either way my expectations aren't high for it because i feel like he already used his best verses for this era on "Sorry 4 the Wait 2".
