(With many thanks to Dave P for giving me the heads up on this).

OK, everyone, please find below a link to a recording of the first of the two pre-tour warm up dates that My Bloody Valentine played at London's Institute of Contemporary Arts. The show I have is the first one they played, on 13 June 2008 (incidentally, my birthday...):

http://www.sendspace.com/file/9emnqx

This is all one mp3 file, and it very much sounds like an audience recording. As a result, the vocals are somewhat muffled, but the rest of the sound is surprisingly rather good (best heard on headphones if you have a laptop). The setlist is pretty unchanged from the set I saw them perform at the Roundhouse last month.

Enjoy!

atari's already got on of the heavy hitters covered. and the Peel sesh is outstanding.

Edit: I found a good one from 1988 as well, all I have it labeled as is "1988-Hanau, West Germany". I've surmised that it's the same tour as the one I talked about above. All stuff from before YMMR. However, the quality on this one is much better. (You can actually hear everything really quite well) The only drawback is that it's one track clocking in at over 46 minutes. I'd be happy to upload it if there's interest.

yes please!

Thanks! This will be priority listening material later this evening.

I found some more info on it.

Yes, they recording does have "Sylvie's Head" and "Paint A Rainbow" twice.

MellySingsDoom 07.16.2008 01:04 AM

Sonic Youth 37 - a plus one from me for a copy of this boot as well. I've neard heard the "Strawberry Wine/Ecstasy" stuff done live.

Sonic Youth 37 07.16.2008 09:00 AM

If you guys wanted another I could upload this today. The quality is more like later MBV boots where you can hear the drums and static guitar all the time, but vocals come and go. Nowhere the quality of the other one.

Sonic Youth 37 - if you could upload it, that would be great. No rush for you to upload it on my part, any time would be good. Cheers for this, matey :)

Cantankerous 07.16.2008 09:43 AM

I have 3 shows from 89 and one YMMR-Isn't Anything that I don't have a date for. I'll pick the best from those and upload it as well.

Edit: I found a date that matches the setlist for the one I was unsure about. I might as well make a list of all the shows I have.

MellySingsDoom 07.16.2008 09:53 AM

Cantanky - Ah, that's good. Funny to listen to the noise bit in "YMMR" on the boot last night, and having that last a mere 10 mins, compared to the 30 mins I experience at the Roundhouse. A friend of mine saw them in Manchester a few days after me, and he said that the YMMR noise bit there went to 40mins.

EDIT - Sonic Youth 47 - that's well generous of you. Thankx again.

Cantankerous 07.16.2008 09:57 AM

i had to hold my ears during the noise bit
which was a pain in the ass because i had a cigarette and i had to stand there with my hands at my ears and a fag dangling out of my mouth, all the smoke getting in my eyes and ashing all over myself

i think the second mbv show was the last show there that they allowed smoking
stroke of luck on that one

MellySingsDoom 07.16.2008 10:02 AM

No smoking for Melly at the Roundhouse. Being a "real man" (he say lying), I didn't bother with such niceties as covering my ears/using earplugs etc - I just let the din deafen me senseless. Like a relaxing bubblebath but with noise and distortion.

Sonic Youth 37 / atari 2600 - thanks again for your generosity on the MBV boots.

To the US-boardies here - if you get the chance to check out MBV once they hit the States, then go. You will not be disappointed :)

seriously, i'm seeing them twice more in september. they were just as good live as they were back then.

MellySingsDoom 07.16.2008 03:46 PM

You lucky thing! I'm hoping Shields will pull his finger out and finally releases the new material within, uh, my lifetime.

The MBV re-issues of "Isn't Anything" and "Loveless" are out in Engerland now. Am definitely getting the "Isn't Anything" CD re-ish, and may splash out for "Loveless" too....blimey, what with this and the forthcoming Loop reissues, it's like 1989 all over again.

Cantankerous 07.16.2008 03:53 PM

i've got the LP reissues of isn't anything and loveless on 180gm vinyl

i think they were released by plain records?

MellySingsDoom 07.16.2008 03:55 PM

Must be a US thang, Cantankster - fucking Creation Records were too skinflint and/or cuntish to re-issue those back in the day.

Cantankerous 07.16.2008 03:57 PM

alan mcgee is a stupid cunt.

Sucks, I wish I could have seen them, but the Chicago tickets sold out before I made up my mind.

Find a desperate ticket scalper if you can - I paid £25 ($50) for mine, and it was worth every penny/cent.

Sonic Youth 37 07.16.2008 05:47 PM

I've thought about it. I'd still have about $300 into getting to Chicago. Fucking sucks living in the middle of fucking nowhere.

MellySingsDoom 07.16.2008 05:52 PM

Yeech, that's a lot of money to pay for a gig, tis true. But in all seriousness, if you can afford it (even barely), go for it. They were as good in June 2008 as they were in Feb 1990 (when I first saw them) - not as trebly though - that first gig was monstrously painful (but ecstatic) and my hearing was fucked for about 5 days afterwards...I had that tinnitus-like "wheeee" sound going on, so everything sounded like Feedback city. Happy days!

cool...
they came here and played this magnificent refurbished theatre...

Hey, marleypumpkin, if you're ever bored go by the Greyhound-Trailways station in Knoxville and check the Donkey Kong machine...all the hi-scores are by "S-Y" and I set them...
(they should still be there)...nothing that great...the top one is 109,000 or 139,000 or something...oh, actually the machine in question has a Pac-Man, Jr. bezel, (love Pac-Man, Jr. by the way) but it's a multi-arcade machine and Donkey Kong is one of the games you can select...a lot of arcade machines are set up this way nowadays using m.a.m.e. roms...i put up the hi-score everywhere I came across a machine that would play Donkey Kong during my recent travels...

Yeah, was a great set as well. Now, I haven't been down to the local bus station in quite a while, I try everything I can to stay away from that part of town, but I do remember last time being there seeing that machine. I reckon yr goal is to achieve the top score on all arcade machines around the country?

Anyways, enjoy.
