Loved both reviews but if anything there were twice as many people straining to be cool on Psychocandy. The difference was they actually pulled it off. [Edit: oh yeah, just noticed the 'straining' bit. You're right. Anyway, they're definitely a band that said it all on their first album and singles. By Automatic they were Sigue Sigue Sputnik without the intelligence.

Not true. I love to death the Automatic album. And Honey's Dead. I love Psychocandy, Darklands, Automatic, and Honey's Dead, each for different reasons. They're all great.

I got hooked through Automatic, one of the first CDs I bought, having finally joined the digital revolution around Christmas of 1989. I still have that CD, although I recently purchased the Plain Recordings LP reissue (which I highly recommend). This album thrills me as much today as when I first put it on that chilly winter evening back in suburban Hampton, VA, in 1989. Nothing I'd heard in a long time made me feel so good and so restless at the same time.

I'm on to Darklands now. Forgot just how good this one is.

Darklands is so great. I might even like it better than Psychocandy, even though candy is the more "definitive" album.

Still think Barbed Wire Kisses is my most listened-to JAMC album.

I would say on their first four singles.

I'm the same way with Darklands. I know Psychocandy is supposed to be the classic, and I like it, but I enjoy Darklands more.

I'm on the fence about Barbed Wire but I haven't listened to it in a while. May have to try it again soon.

Oh man, how did I miss the Dirty Three release? Gonna have to go get that one!

Does anybody know anything about this bootleg copy of their Peel sessions? I have Complete Peel on the Strange Fruit 2xLP release but I saw this in a store recently. I really like the cover art but the song list looks exactly the same. Thoughts?

Like you say, it's just a bootleg version of The Complete John Peel Sessions...
