it only works when the shit quality results situationally (ie the band has absolutely no money for recording)
when people try and sound like shit on purpose...no.

I don't really like anything I've heard after Rock Laahausta Vastaan and Terveet Kadet II. Keep in mind I haven't heard everything they put out after those two. But, they're definitely two of my favorite things to listen to.

Absolute awesomeness.

demonrail666 06.17.2008 10:40 AM

I remember seeing Medicine open for White Zombie in the late 80s. That was just pigfuck central.

here's some more shit love for you:

The Phantom Pregnancies

demonrail666 06.17.2008 12:19 PM

Haha, that was great!

Did anyone around London in the late 80s get to catch Bone Cancer doing that gig in a sewer? Heard they positively oozed into the pigfuck that night.

batreleaser 06.17.2008 02:01 PM

harry pussy was amazing, cant stress that enough. all their records, even their fill lenthgs, what was music?, ride a dove, sound like loud as fuck live shows with non-tuned instruments. they definitley straddle the lines between noise rock hardcore and harsh noise for a sound that is absoutley fucking brutal.

depending on the music, i absolutley love dirt poor zero plished grimey as fuck recording. meaning, like hardcore, grindcore, noise rock, some black metal, half japanese type-indie punk, noisecore, etc., are all better off with cheap recording. but i woudlnt wanna listen to 'pet sounds' if it wasnt for that crisp production.

more nice no fi/grimey shit:
royal trux (duh)
shearing pinx
venom-black metal
bad brains-ROIR
agnostic front-victim in pain
black flag-nervous breakdown
brainbombs
dropdead
charles bronson
spazz
early napalm death
crass
gg allin
conflict
nausea
rudimentary peni
suicide-s/t (more lo-fi but whatever)
springsteen-nebraska (se above)
anti cimex
disfear
s.o.b.
the crucifucks
ex cocaine
teenage jesus

If anyone has the album by The Brentwoods and would be so kind to up it I'd really appreciate it, thanks.

Toilet & Bowels 06.17.2008 02:37 PM

it seems it goes for £20 or £30 on ebay

DJ Rick 06.17.2008 02:44 PM

No-fi or lo-fi should never be used as an excuse to make something that sucks. With bands like Times New Viking and Tyvek and Eat Skull and Psychedelic Horseshit getting more interest from people now, I'm anticipating a wave of second-wave mimicries that are gonna fail, but still try to pass themselves off as passable at least...just like what happened following the wave of acclaim for Pavement and Guided By Voices so many years ago, resulting in "lo-fi" becoming recognized as a genre by the media.

The point is that you do the best with what circumstances you have, and even if you're broke, you make do and hopefully find awesome results. And even if you are rich and you choose to be lo-fi on purpose, if you know what you're doing, you can make it sound excellent regardless.....just so long as you don't suck in some other aspect of record-making.

Hopefully your label will at least pay extra so as not to have Aardvark master that shit. Or else your cymbals are gonna sound like radio static, and that's not a sound that works for many bands. That's squandered some potentially great records.

I'd make you a list of what's good here now, but I already do that every week with the AFS playlists. Most of that's pretty budget or downright slummy.

sarramkrop 06.17.2008 03:05 PM

I'll check ebay for that record.

DJ Rick, when are the Pink Reason 7'' singles going to be reissued? Also, when is/are Pink Reason going to tour the UK again?

Toilet & Bowels 06.17.2008 03:07 PM

i think i started this thread before i was aware of your radio show, and decided to resurect it in light of recent interests.

MellySingsDoom 06.17.2008 03:11 PM

As a point of discussion, for me the genesis of post-1977 lo-fi means the Fall, like the first half of "Spectre vs Rector", "WMC Blob 59" (very Dead-C like) and the "Totale's Turns" version of "New Puritan". Before them, I would say that some stuff on the first Amon Duul I LP, "Psychadelic Underground", is equally as influential...as well as some very early Throbbing Gristle stuff. But for me, the killer real lo-fi stuff is very early blues recordings - technically "wrong" recordings, but with so much power.

demonrail666 06.17.2008 03:16 PM

Yes, Exile on Main Street is another one. Ventilator Blues

sarramkrop 06.17.2008 03:18 PM

Does anyone on this thread like Boogie Witch? They're another ace band.

There's a couple of the 7"es that are still in print. The one on Fashionable Idiots is still available, I think....as is "Winona" (which is some of the earliest Pink Reason recordings).

The first 7" went through several pressings. It was made in an initial pressing of 300 which sold slowly at first, but by now, I think I heard something about 2500 of those being sold between the original Savage Quality self-release and the Criminal IQ broke-dick-swastika reissue. I think the one on Trickknee went through a couple pressings really fast. A lotta people claim it as their fave. Trickknee releases don't come out very often, so I wouldn't wait for a reissue.

There's been a 2xLP planned for a Siltbreeze release since last year. Not sure of the schedule on that. Or any foreign tour plans. I know he'll be coming westward here in the States with Rot Shit pretty soon, though. Still mapping the itinerary, but I'm hoping to get my local date soon.

batreleaser 06.17.2008 09:36 PM

if were gonna say 'exile...', we should say 'at their satanic magesties request' as well.

The whole lo-fi thing is getting a lot of play here in Columbus right now. TNV, Psychedelic Horseshit, etc...From back in the day, you've also got The Bassholes, Swearing at Motorists, Thomas Jefferson Slave Apartments, Great Plains, etc...

Phlegmscope 08.28.2008 06:54 PM

"TWISTED ARTPUNK OF FINLAND"
http://www.lostinthegrooves.com/node/2243

Check out the do you wanna dance -cover. it's mental in a shaggs way.

Pax Americana 08.28.2008 07:27 PM

Early Guided By Voices was pretty lo-fi, and pretty awesome.

batreleaser 08.28.2008 07:54 PM

i can think of so many great bands that if they were stripped of thier sirty as fuck lo fi productiion, would lose all thier charm and excitement. pussy galore, the screamers, half japanese, royal trux, to live and shave in la, thee headcoats, the gories, darkthrone, so many more but im high so icant think of em. the newish great bands live skull, pink reasons, the hospitals, pengo, psychedelic horseshit, blah blah etc.. all those bands' music was great because of the rawness, and the bands mentioned above that lost that lo fi production value made increasingly bad music. and also theres the downside for all those great bands theres the legion of imitators that pass off lack of talent for "lo fi dirty rawness" fuck em.

pbradley 08.28.2008 07:57 PM

Man, I thought this was going to be about bands that refuse to record or something. Live only acts. Are there such things? I remember an old band of mine had the philosophy, mostly out of laziness and poverty.

The Earl Of Slander 08.28.2008 10:10 PM

I thought this was going to be a thread about a local label and promotion company here in Newcastle, England. I was like "Damn. I love 'em, but this is a mighty big thread". I guess the reality makes much more sense.

I'm going to throw Factums on the recommendation pile. Their Alien Native LP is goooooooooooood, and the fidelity is totally messed up. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5WgyxaV3AW0

Death & the Maiden 08.29.2008 12:51 AM

People go on about the low quality production of bands like Darkthrone and other black metal bands, but the worst I've heard is Fimbulwinter. The vocals are almost inaudible, the bass is almost inaudible (not unusual for bm bands though), and at times the guitar can be just a constant noise. Despit this, it's still my favourite black metal album.
Fimbulwinter - Servants of Sorcery

'transylvanian hunger' has a very stripped back sounding production, as i feel all black metal should. mayhem, beherit, burzum, gorgoroth, and others back in the day, all raw souding, all awesome. how black metal should be, not like the over-produced cornball fest that would become popular in the mid 90s with cradle of filth and dimmu borgir. even these days i think the best black metal is the under produced kind, like striborg for instant.

ZEROpumpkins 08.29.2008 02:34 AM

Early-Mid 90's Guided by Voices is the lowest-fi music I am yet to hear.

fugazifan 08.29.2008 03:09 AM

although i would never categorize them as no fi or whatnot, sun city girls have some of the lowest fi recording i have heard.
a lot of box of chameleons and especially valentines for matahari, which is probably the worst recording to be put to tape. but it still has a few gems on it
