World Looks Red. A live version was on a compilation LP that I bought in about 1985, and it blew my mind.

Mote
First song i heard by sonic youth and also one of the best i've ever heard Screeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeechspickseffffffffffffffff fffuuuuuzzzzzz i love the noise part at the end!!! |
Starpower, when it wasd released. I was 14. I've always loved rythym, so that hit me, but also I thin it was maybe I'd heard a female vocalist in that kind of a band (alternative stuff was much less prevalent in those days!) and that impressed me enormously.
I can't be sure, but I would have heard it either on John Peel's show or in Probe records in Liverpool. |
KOOL THING. And yeah it was the first song I heard. But I did want to hear it over and over again so it does count.

Good pick, that's currently one of my favorites along with Inhuman and Improvision Ajoutee. Mine is Sugar Kane, when I first bought Dirty and used to listen to it 4 times a day since at the time it was better than any other CD I had. Still a really good song, it took me a while before I realized what he was referring to. |
ahh, i remember this vividly (which is unusual as my memory is generally a complete sack of shit).
it was theresa's sound world, i remember hearing dirty and after a few listens i kept coming back to this song, there was something eerie about it, the chords didn't sound like anything i'd heard in any other song, ever. there's plenty of other songs that i prefer to it now, but the otherworldly sound of it really made me want to explore sonic youth further. seems like such a long time ago now. |
Has to be Wish Fulfillment for me. Still love it but my favourite song by them changes every week now.
|
mine was actually free city rhymes. i just love how it seems to start with these strange abstract guitar structures that slowly morph into this amazingly beautiful piece. and then at the end it just takes off...
|
Mine was teenage riot after I heard it for the first time I wanted to keep hearing it over and over.
|
Sugar Kane was the one that put it in my head that buying a SY album might be a good idea.
Still has a special place in my heart. |
Bull in the Heather.

Experimental Jet Set... was the first SY album I heard, and "Bull in the Heather" is the first song I remember liking.
