a mini-story about can's ege bamyasi..

the word "can" means "life" or "alive" in turkish.. when they are on holiday in turkey, they come across the artifact on the cover of the album.. it's a tin of okra, and "ege bamyası" (as the correct spelling goes) means "aegean okra" in turkish.. the brand is, of course, CAN...
they decide to name the album just like that..

interesting to see turkish okra make popular culture history...

I thought Die Toedliche Doris were considered more of an industrial/noise type thing.....

the german oak were Austrians? I thought they were from Düsseldorf.

i really like delay by can but i'm not sure if it really sounds like krautrock.

Toilet & Bowels 06.05.2006 08:42 AM

you can't really sound like krautrock as many of the bands sound totally different to one another. can are krautrock.

and as for AMT & gong, the only stuff i've heard from gong has been pretty jazzy or proggy so i wouldn't compare them to AMT

Thanks again for the input.

Are there any good live LP's? I like live recordings.

Savage Clone 06.05.2006 08:45 AM

Agitation Free and Guru Guru just each had some previously unreleased and good sounding live recordings released.

Agitation Free live album is called "At The Cliffs Of River Rhine," and the Guru Guru one is called Essen 1970. Both great!

Some time ago I scored Popol Vuh's In the gardens of pharaoh/aguirre 2LP for a really modest price. That has some really nice stuff.

Faust IV and the Neu! catalogue form the basis for pretty much the entire early Stereolab musical style.

Others I love:

Witthuser and Westrupp
Agitation Free
Cosmic Jokers
Guru Guru (first three LPs are incredible)
Necronomicon (more German heavy prog then Krautrock per se, but from the same time period. "Tips Zum Selbstmord" is an absolute classic of heavy prog evilness)

The "Tone Float" album by the pre-Kraftwerk, Pre-Neu! collaboration known as Organisation is beautiful.

Popol Vuh made some incredible LPs as well, especially the soundtrack to Herzog's "Aguirre."

Ash Ra Tempel's first album is essential, as is the first album by Gila.

let em know Mr.Clone*

if you listen to gong's camembert electric, you can trace a lot of it's influence it had on amt.

oh, you also might be interested in two blogs Sonic*Fetish posted on the old board. Tons of stuff to download, amongst others Krautrock
