Word up. How's Book of the New Sun ;)

Bruno is light Prince for ignorant pop music fans. ever since punk became mainstream, no one wants the the originals. just the regurgitate. and the world continues along thinking it's original.

The world? I don't know man. Prince's music has been HUGE this year. I don't think anyone over 30 or under 18 listens to Bruno Mars.

Whenever someone tells me "so and so" is better than Prince I have four words for them: I Would Die 4U (4U is a word of Prince says it's a word)

pepper_green 11.16.2016 07:54 PM

I was thinking of uptown funk. it's personal. after I threaten someone with a Prince mix. how dare they one up on me with some Bruno bullshite! knowing I couldn't let my offspring hear the real shit. im telling you, most people want a copycat rehash while ignoring the old true sex sound.

Prince forever. Bruno in the dumpster now! what's his style anyway?

noisereductions 11.16.2016 09:38 PM

I once said that in a perfect world, every mixtape would start with "Take Me With U."

pepper_green 11.16.2016 09:42 PM

see, noisereductions has the right ideal. Prince is the king and stop copying his style.

louder 11.16.2016 11:38 PM

So much Bruno hate here.

For years and years I was one of the Wu's most vocal supporters. But as much as I still love their first four albums, my entire opinion on them as a group has been damaged so severely over the last couple years that it's depressing to even think about them in the context of Tribe.

I used to follow and rep every member on social media, but after years of seeing pathetic posts peddling new "Wu tang brand" products (most of which are embarrassingly childish, like rolling papers and "dynamite sticks") I can't stomach it anymore.

To give you an idea of just how much my opinion of them has changed, consider this: I haven't even bothered to listen to a snippet of a track Martin S. has teased from the "new" album. Not only because it represents the greatest political abomination in American history, but also because I just don't fucking give a shit anymore.
Yet I spent years between albums waitjng desperately for a glimpse of what would become 8 Diagrams back in the day.

Compare that to how an 8 second snippet of "Father Stretch My Hands pt.1" made me lose my fucking grown ass mind for weeks, and you can see how completely the group has fallen from favor.

So true by the way, it's sad what's become of Wu Tang. RZA finally agreed to let Ghost handle their next album but I'm not getting my hopes up.

Bruno gets a lot of shit for being unoriginal though.

And Mark Ronson's production on Uptown Funk actually got him sued by multiple musicians.

louder 11.17.2016 03:58 AM

Bruno is talented. He plays keys, drums and guitar, produces, sings, writes and dances, and he's above average at all these things. I was really impressed by his vocal performance throughout the new album. And he's steadily getting better on every album for sure.

With that said, I do wish his music was more headed towards the future.

Rob Instigator 11.17.2016 11:02 AM

Bruno is a talented hack, whether by choice or by being forced into it from his years as a behind the scenes writer for other musicians.

Dude. I love you, so maybe lets not talk about Bruno Mars. If you like him, and find joy in his music, I'm genuinely happy for you. Seriously. Happiness is rare, and the things that bring it are invaluable, and I wouldn't begrudge you even the most trivial foot-tapping joy from listening to music, no matter who makes it or where it comes from.

But I have nothing good to say about the guy, except that he can do stuff that anyone who practices enough can do (sing, play instruments, produce). I hate his stupid voice and his stupid hat and even his name makes my fists clench.

You know, I can bloody well play music. I first picked up the guitar at age 10. Done ok with it in the subsequent 20-something years. Picked up a few other things too. In my opinion, just being able to DO something doesn't really mean anything. It's doing it in a new, original, mind-expanding kind of way that's important. And that's not Bruno Mars. And it's obviously not me, because nobody's talking about my ass or throwing their panties at me, and I'm certainly not rolling in dough.

Sounds like Sia. Except she actually has something in her weirdo voice and creepily agoraphobic persona that feels interesting and justifies her existence. Even though I don't listen to her.

noisereductions 11.17.2016 11:38 AM

I like Sia. I like the sound of her voice anyway. She can belt it. I don't own a single album, nor have I heard one beginning to end. But I do like all the singles she drops.

Severian 11.17.2016 11:40 AM

Pitchfork on ATCQ's We Got it From Here...

"Nothing about this feels like a legacy cash-in; it feels like a legit A Tribe Called Quest album. We should be the ones thanking them."

Nailed it.

I think this album may have a legitimate shot at being their album of the year, actually. I predicted it would get a 9.0 or above rating. That means that it's one of the top rated new albums of the year. TLOP and Bon Iver's 22, A Million got the same rating... Coloring Book and A Moon Shaped Pool both got 9.1s, and since Coloring Book isn't entirely an album in every official sense of the word, and the rest of those artists have all been given album of the year honors before (Kanye twice ;) ), I think Tribe has he best chance at the moment.

Also, it's their last opportunity to give ATCQ top honors.

Still not sure why they jizzed over the new Radiohead so much, but whatever.

noisereductions 11.17.2016 11:43 AM

new Radiohead was boring.

Well, I can tell you this... the version of "Wolves" that was on TLOP before you listened to it (I'm guessing you still haven't heard that version because, y'know, what's the point?) was MUCH less interesting.

Sia's verse being put back on the track did wonders for it. Gave it that "serious MBDTF Kanye & co." feel and added a whole new aural dimension to the song. If she can make an already pretty damn good Kanye West song into an outright classic Kanye West anthem, then I certainly have nothing against her.

Mostly, yup.
I still really like "Burn the Witch" partly because it was an unabashed Trump did track before such things were commonplace, and because it grooves right along. I also like "Ful Stop" quite a bit. The rest of it is pretty much just OK.
