It's a stupid name for a band is what it is. Not as bad as "Portugal. The Man", though — I mean, the latter is the ALL-TIME FUCKING NADIR of band names or pseudonyms or whatever the fuck that crap is.

No way man. Portugal, the Man is not the worst. I’m SURE I know of a worse one... just can’t think of it right now.

30 Seconds to Mars is worse, actually. But I don’t that’s not even the one I was thinking of. Hmm.

Got RATHER RIPPED for fifty cents at library books sale.

Yeah, I already have it. But what was I gonna do? Not buy it?

noisereductions 10.09.2017 12:33 PM

I've bought many SY albums twice, but for bonus tracks.

That's actually a period there, not a comma. "Portugal. The Man". Which makes it WORSE. And WHAT THE FUCK DOES THAT EVEN MEAN. FUCK HIM/THEM.

Hahaha! It’s a PERIOD?! What?! Ok, it’s pretty goddamn bad, but there still another that I’m thinking of that might be worse. Can’t remmeber what, but it’s bad.

Men Without Hats isn’t great
The World is A Beautiful Place and I Am no Longer Afraid to Die is also really fucking bad.

But there’s one that’s just not coming to me.

I’ve bought almost every SY album at least twice. You did the right thing.

Nice! Got that one with The Eternal via Matador's Buy Early Get Now shenanigans. Is that still a thing?

Graham Bond - Holy Magick

Really happy to have finally obtained a vinyl copy of this 1970 ecstatic occult prog/jazz masterpiece. Enochian calls and all.

Massenvernichtungswaffen 11.17.2017 02:56 AM

Land of Talk - Life after Youth

Very mellow compared to earlier works. I recommend the album "Applause Cheer Boo Hiss" to anyone who hasn't heard them. It's the debut and their most energetic and intense release. Liz Powell's one hell of a guitarist. 3 piece band. Very unique guitar tone and lots of open tuning and soloing akin to melding Ranaldo with Cobain.

Ella Fitzgerald Sings the Duke Ellington Songbook

Not sure if this is the correct cover art. Ordered it a few days ago, and found this on Google images just to share. The version I ordered has three discs though.

Originally I was just getting a copy for my father for Christmas, and I decided to snag one for myself. The price was right and the music’a good. I also am a fan of the Ella Sings Gershwin boxed set.

hey another biggie knocked off my want list! Medium Rare was released for Record Store Day 2011, originally as a vinyl only release. It's a covers album, which I'm a big fan of. And It was then re-released in a limited capacity on CD in Europe in cooperation w/ Q Magazine. Copies aren't exactly "rare," as there's always a handful on ebay and Discogs. The problem is that copies generally aren't cheap, so I'd been waiting to at least find what I considered a deal. Happy to finally have this album.

Last EP: The Paranoid Style--Underworld USA CD
Last full length album: Tyvek--Origin Of What CD

I bought the latter from main Tyvek guy Kevin Boyer. Protomartyr (of which Boyer was a member at one time) gets all the hype, but when it comes to punk from Detroit, I prefer Tyvek.

Wait — apparently there is a Mariana Timony that's not Mary Timony? Not that her real name is necessarily Mariana Timony. I mean, I'm "Manimal" on Bandcamp...

Haven't bought so many albums recently, so I decided to make up for it, and purchased the following.
Olafur Arnalds & Nils Frahm - Collaborative Works
Black-Eyed Snakes - Seven Horses
Jesu / Sun Kil Moon - Jesu / Sun Kil Moon
Facs - Negative Houses
Lubomyr Melnyk - Rivers And Streams

I actually bought a few more, but can't remember what they were ....

.... because the confirmation mail ended up in my SPAM folder. So these were all ordered from the subrosa label:

subsonic 6: lou barlow / rudy trouvé
charlemagne palestine + rhys chatham - Youuu + Mee = Weee (3CD)
winter family - Red Sugar
winter family - s/t
eric thielemans - EARR plays a Snare is a Bell
Oiseaux-Tempête - TARAB (2LP)

anyone familiar with Winter Family? Me neither, but the samples I tried sounded cool, some even reminded me of Low's Organ Reframed performance.
Eric Thielemans is a Belgian drummer, known by me for his work with e.g. Rudy Trouve (in Tape Cuts Tape) and Chantal Acda. Rudy Trouve was guitarist on the first dEUS album.

dirty bunny 06.07.2018 04:54 PM

I believe it was Doves' The Last Broadcast. Good album! Doves always seemed to "fly" under the radar. Quotes added to emphasize the pun.

dirty bunny 09.24.2018 11:49 PM

I bought Master of Puppets by Metallica. Not my favourite, but still has some very solid tunes.

SonicSleuth 09.26.2018 10:32 PM

Low - Double Negatiive - LP
Glenn Branca - The Ascension - LP
This Heat - Deceit - LP
Mount Eerie - (after) - LP
Taiwan Housing Project - Veblen Death Mask - Cassette

I just placed an order for things from id m theft able.

My favorite album title over for the past 20 years: If I’m Too Fat For You, Why Don’t You Come Over Here And Suck Out All The Fat

The last album I bought was Blur's Parklife, which I got at the local (second-hand?) record store. $10 on CD, definitely worth it. The self-titled album is better, but I already owned it.

Looked for any SY stuff, but all they had was Goo, the one I do own. :(

_tunic_ 10.23.2018 01:19 PM

The excellent solo album by Bert Dockx, called Transit. It's a collection of covers with following tracklist:
  1. Albatross (Fleetwood Mac)
  2. Rake (Townes Van Zandt)
  3. Shadowplay (Joy Division)
  4. Yesterday Is Here (Tom Waits)
  5. I’m On Fire (Bruce Springsteen)
  6. Sinnerman (Nina Simone)
  7. I Shall Be Released (Bob Dylan)
Check it out!

And also:

the first album by Dans Dans was originally self-released in 2012. It's been reprinted this year

But the music is not :)
Think Coltrane, Sun Ra, guitar, bass, drums, freak out and cassette loops played through the guitar, with a special Flemish sauce
