it took me a very, very long time to get it right, and i suspect this "great gig" business will take even longer.
i will be sure to look for that patty waters LP, by the way. |
melly:
this is mostly for you it's just a small sample though, only about ten seconds this could be well embarrassing but this was the part i had the least trouble with http://www.yousendit.com/download/TT...V3JTSUR2Wmc9PQ |

No, not embarrassing at all. A very good shot at it - well done. I hear what you mean now about hitting the high notes. Yeah, keep on practising, and you'll get there, girl. Can't wait to hear the full version when you're ready. |
i think i can't hit the high notes because i smoke too much, which is problematic (and what any scratchiness there comes from)
the lower notes i have very little difficulty with, but if i try and sing in too high a register my voice literally cuts out completely. |
Ooh, I dunno, Siouxsie Sioux smoked like a trooper when she was making "The Scream", and she hits some pretty good high notes on that (I'm thinking of, ironically, "Nicotine Stain"). I think with music in general, anyone worth their salt would be able to work with their "limitations" and come up with something even better. I get the idea that you're quite a taskmaster with yourself - if so, that's good, cos it means you can push yourself more and more. There's no point doing something in a half-assed way, is there?
|
well, of course i'm going to keep at it because i don't like to half ass things. i'd much rather not do something than half ass it. it's "all or nothing", if you like.
even if i never do get it right, that's okay though, because i can sing every other song on the album well enough. my voice is much more suited to, say, breathe in the air. |
Yeah, exactly.
One thing that annoys me with some vocalists is that they're all technique but no bloody passion. Hearing someone go for it properly (like Claire Torry in "Great Gig"...) is what music is about for me (and you, of course!). Back to yerself, I was just thinking that "Great Gig" must be technically pretty damn hard to pull off - a lot of hitting different registers in quick succession - actually, come to think of it, like the vocal equivalent of John Coltrane in full melodic flow. Bloody hell, I'm even more impressed with you trying to sing "Great Gig" now, seriously. |
that's my theory. just go for it, and if it doesn't work, rip it up and start again. and you can always tell if the passion for it isn't there.
|
You just summed up in one sentence what I've been trying to say. Checkmated again ;).
Listen, I have to go in a minute (have to do crap like housework and laundry), and also need to sort my life out to go out later on. It's been great chatting w/you, and yeah, do keep up with the practising. Have a great day in luvverleee France, take care of yerself, and say hello to yer other half ("Melly? Who the fuck calls themselves Melly?!" :D). |
haha. i'd do your laundry for you if i could, i actually enjoy it.
have a lovely day, dear! |
speaking of passion in music
on live at pompeii you can totally just see that it's there when roger screams in careful with that axe eugene i love it when people make faces when they sing |
I'm in the precess of orginisinfga bunch of desperados. Watch this space. It could all go very wrong.
|
melly! exciting news!
i did it :D |

This must be the supergroup called you-know-what, surely? If so, you up for the manager's job? I see you as a Warhol-type figure....get us all together dude, and we could be as big as, er, Terminal Cheesecake ;):D |

not the whole thing, but longer probably not very good but i'll continue working on it i just listened to it again fuck it, i don't have the right voice for it, despite actually being able to hit the notes. well i'm embarrassed now. carry on. |
Currently having a bit of a problem d-loading your stuff. Will persevere and let you know as soon as I have it sorted.
|
Sorry Cantanky - I've tried 4 times now, and I keep getting an "Internal Error" message. :(. Will keep trying, as I do want to hear how you've progressed.
|
it's fine
i'll try and record a better one some other time |
You've inspired me to put some of my crappy efforts onto MySpace. I'll sort it out later on today, and send you a link, so you can a good laugh at my, er, talent (ahem...)

To be prefectly honest you're right, I'd be a better manager than musician. It's 3 guys I know who are ''talking'' about it, so let's see if the talk becomes a reality. If Cunt-Staples are up for having a manager, I'm available. |
Yeah, you can certainly manage us, sarram. Just remember to bill us above the puppet show, and not below.

Finally dowloaded it. I can hear the bits where you're struggling to hit the right notes, but when you get there it sounds really good. Again, well done & keep going for it. |

i think my voice needs to sound...bigger and boomier, less thin, you know? |
Your mum's right. The texture of the voice will come I think, once you're confident with shaping the way the vocals go.
By the way, did you bother listening to the crap I put up on MySpace today? If you think it's shite, I don't mind you telling me so. I mean, I think my ego can just about take it ;) |
i'll listen to it after i gorge myself with more food and then go to sleep. promise.
|
Melly I listened to your myspace, the first tune is fuckin awesome. The second one is good but I like the first one alittle better i think.
I'm sure my stuff is more straight forward pop with tiny bits of noise thrown in but I'd like to see what you & cank think of it. you two are taking over this thread :-P |
^^^^Thanks dude - much appreicate your comments! Have just come back from a night out w/sarramkrop, so am a bit, er merry ;). Will definitely check your stuff out properly.
Me and Cantanky - yeah, I guess we own this thread now :p heh heh. Have you heard her v. recent stuff on here - for what it's worth, I really like her voice. |

 oh stop melly i do like yr songs by the way |
LOL at the rolleyes.
Thanks for the kind comments about me songs - to be honest, I didn't think that electronic racket would be your cup of tea. You still practising the "Great Gig..."? |
you're welcome
i haven't practised at all today actually, i went out shopping and i fit into a UK size 4 (that's a 0 in the US) pants!!!! i was shocked, as i've been quite the little piglet lately |
Size 4 - blimey, that's well slim! Must be all that Malboro Red smoking and devil horn wearing you be doing.
|
it's insanity, i tell you. i should be obese.
|
Well, enjoy the slimness now that you got it going good!
Back to music and shite - you heard any good stuff in France? |
nah, i haven't like, looked at schedules for any venues or anything, mostly just been laying on my ass on the beach and smoking weed, either that or sick in bed.
|
|
Cantanky - sounds alright to me. Wish I could be lying on a beach somewhere at t'moment.
atsonicpark - will check out yr stuff in due course. |
yes i have heard cantaks stuff I dig it indeed, she has a very good voice...but then again, me and her might be on the same drugs so it all sounds the same.
|
DeadDiscoDildo - nice stuff. Especially liked "I Kill Moon".
atsonicpark - yer new EP's not too shabby at all. I like the "cut-up" aspect of the production. |
