The DVD actually includes a documentary-inside-the-documentary, In The Edges: The 'Grizzly Man' Session, about fifty magnificent minutes on the soundtrack's creation/recording, with Herzog losing it here and there and Richard responding with more musical genius. You can catch a tiny clip here:

Speaking of, Feeding Back: Conversations With Alternative Guitarists From Proto-Punk To Post-Rock is a truly excellent book and you should also add it to your list. Actually, forget the list, just get it right now. Browse that site to check the list of interviewees (Lee is one of them, by the way) and some bitchen excerpts like this:

I heard Bob Bucko Jr. on, What's This Called?

Ordered the new Bob Bucko Jr. from Personal Archives and picked up a few other items:

The Heavenly Sounds In Lo-Fidelity has been playing non-stop!

I just picked this up. New Jefre Cantu-Ledesma EP.
Fucking beautiful and excellent as always. One of the single best noise guitarists alive right now. My fucking God. Incredible.

I've been buying a good deal of Damon Smith releases......from the two cassettes in my previous post to a CD he released with Henry Kaiser earlier this year.

You are correct, and Grizzly Man is a great soundtrack, wish it was on vinyl. The DVD has a great documentary on the recording session too.

"Debut" album by band formerly known as Viet Cong.

Dumb that they changed their name, but whatever. Viet Cong's self-titled LP was fantastic. I have high hopes for this one.

Jack Rose reissues, finally got Red Horse, White Mule, was the only one I was missing. Still regret not getting an original when I saw him on an early tour.

Pretty lucky to have seen him.
I wasn't aware reissues were coming, but I'll be taking advantage. The only record I own a non-iTunes hard copy of is Jack Rose & The Black Twig Pickers.

I was late to the party. But damn that man could play. I look forward to boosting my collection.

This is just... immeasurably good. Are you discovering it these days or is it a case of "I finally got it on such-and-such format because my previous copy sounded like someone spilled Pepsi all over it"? In any event, you don't wanna wait too long to get the 5CD Complete Jack Johnson Sessions, which features (among others!) Sharrock, McLaughling, Hancock, Cobham and Miles himself carpetbombing the studio with LOUD badassness. Plus, interviews with Robert Quine and Nels Cline! For once, the label's description nails it: not jazz-rock; ROCK-jazz, motherfucker.

Ah. I've never heard this. My dad has it, in his massive collection of Miles reissues and anthologies, but I've never listened. You've convinced me.

Despite the tragedy that is having spent decades without listening to this album, you're a lucky guy as apparently you have a cool dad. My father was a violent alcoholic sociopath and his taste in music was shit. Hopefully Satan is partying on his ass right now.

Well, not that it really matters, but it's actually my stepfather who has the great jazz collection. My real father actually sounds like he'd get along swimmingly with yours. Alcoholic, workaholic, psychologically abusive, and so on.

Still, he had me listening to the Beatles and Dylan before I even left the womb, and helped me meet Lou Reed once. So not all bad.

Severian 10.31.2016 05:46 PM

Bought this at about 10 p.m. last night even though it wasn't supposed to come out until today. It was pretty much the most exciting thing I've done all month, which is very sad indeed.

Negativland - Over The Edge Vol. 9......came with baggie containing two grams of founding member, Donald S. Joyce, cremated remains

What will you do with the remains? Seems weird to display them, but disrespectful to throw them out.

Holy shit that is super fucking weird.

Negativland is great and I saw a documentary about them once that made me totally re-evaluate multimedia samples and noise in music. Still probably wouldn't be inclined to hang on to those ashes though.

I'd probably just tape the baggie inside the jewel case and stick it with the other collector anomalies like the gummy head USBs.

GREAT questions!

Honestly, I don't have a plan for them. I agree it's a strange and weird perk, but the more I learn of Negativland, it sort of fits. I was amazed I could receive this "final bundle" for less than $15......also, it was set up to where everyone who pre-ordered received their remains on Halloween......talk about marketing

Something I didn't receive, but some who ordered did......a audio cart with sounds recorded by Donald and he would use to perform "live" during his radio show. Most people receiving the carts will have no way to play them, but I had already started the ground work to have someone at KTRU use it.

Musically and especially lyrically it gives me so much. I love how, at one hand, she can make you dwell into your sadness but, on the other hand, also give hope and comfort you in one and the same song.
I mean, "Go Long", holy shit.

"Who made you this way?
Who made you this way?
Who is going to bear your beautiful children?
Do you think you can just stop,
when you're ready for a change?
Who will take care of you
when you're old and dying?

You burn in the Mekong,
to prove your worth,
Go Long! Go Long!
Right over the edge of the earth!
You have been wronged,
tore up since birth.
You have done harm.
Others have done worse.

Will you tuck your shirt?
Will you leave it loose?
You are badly hurt.
You're a silly goose.
"

Oh, my poor heart.

I wish I had better memories of seeing her live at the Jeff Mangum ATP... But it's all mush in my head.

FLAMING LIPS - Oczy Mlody

First listen! Happening right now. May seem like no big deal to some, but to me it's significant. First time listening to a new Flaming Lips album in almost exactly 4 years (the Sgt. Pepper cover album does not count, nor does that thing with Miley Cyrus.)

Incidentally, this is the eleventh Flaming Lips album I've purchased on the day of its release over the past 22 years. :)
