The album from 1986 or 2003? I think the 1986 one is officially considered to just be untitled and 2003 is officially considered the self titled one.

Rays of Darkness is the first MONO album in 15 years to feature no orchestral instruments whatsoever. That fact alone is remarkable given the band's reputation for sweeping, dramatic instrumentals that recall Oscar-worthy film scores. Instead, Rays of Darkness more closely resembles a jet engine taking off inside a small, crowded auditorium. It is MONO's blackest album ever, a collection of scorched riffs, doom rhythms, and an unexpected contribution from post-hardcore pioneer Tetsu Fukagawa of Envy. The album ends with the smoldering wreckage of distorted guitars and ominous drones playing out a eulogy to the days when MONO shot blinding rays of light through seemingly endless darkness.



The Last Dawn is the first of these two companion albums, and is the "lighter" of the two, thematically and melodically. It contains undoubtedly some of MONO's strongest songs ever, drawing on an array of influences from minimalist film score to vintage shoegaze. It is MONO at their absolute purest, executing an uncanny, unspoken dialogue with each other without the dozens of stringed instruments that have been so prominent throughout their catalog. The songs are also noticeably more efficient – there hasn't been a MONO full-length record to fit on a single slab of vinyl since 2003's One Step More And You Die – and the album benefits immeasurably from this streamlined approach. MONO have always been masters of telling compelling stories without words. But now they've proven they can do it without frills, too.

I'm talking about the 2003 release actually. I don't think I really developed a serious interest in the band until I heard that record, which is a bit embarrassing.

But like I said about the Lips: I was listening to them for years before Hear it Is and Soft Bulletin started sounding like they were by same band. But once everything clicked, it was like I realized I realized there was something I was missing about them, and that I didn't just "like" them.. I fucking loved them.

I recently relocated S/t it while I was clearing out a storage unit, and when I started listening to it and I remembered how perfect that album sounded to me when I first bought it. Now I'm on kind of a Muses kick. But I'm sure s/t is not a very frequent choice for fave. album. But fuck it, it's a tremendous album. Puts Tktle TK to shame, and that's saying something.

That's cool. I'm late to the TM party as well, so any album that works for you works for me :)

• The Acid's Liminal is pretty goddamn impressive. It's one of the year's best all around records, for motherfucking certain.

• Homeboy Sandman is like the answer to the question: "what if Chance the Rapper" was an absurdist rather than a traditionalist who put out like 2 LP's a year and and was fast becoming one of Stones Throw's most prolific and inventive emcees? Hallways may be his best album to date.

• Merchandise is a big old hype right now. Okay music w/ pretty crap vocals.

• RUSTIE's Green Language- this mofo helped produce Danny Brown's Old. His record is a fucking ecstasy tasting party for your brain. Danny Brown appears

Holy mother fucking hell that is some beautiful cover art! It's just... Jesus... Totally mesmerizing! I've never listened to this group (yeah, I know. I should be in prison) but how can anything with such breathtaking visual components not be musically brilliant?

Honestly, regarding Mott? Bought used, not likely pristine condition, and barely listened to. I have a lot of these I should give another spin to.

YES - revisiting past purchases can be a true treat! I don't recall seeing that Mott album and was just curious. Over the past couple of years I've been adding past Mott, Kinks, T. Rex and Procol Harum albums to the collection when I stumble across them.

I´ve got All the Young Dudes, Mott & the Hoople from Mott the Hoople, First, Shine On Brightly, Salty Dog, Home, Grand Hotel & Procol´s Ninth from Procol & Kinda Kinks. Not any album from T. Rex. All of them are not my greatest favourites, but I like them a lot! Should buy someday those earlier Hooples´s...

(Some pretty dope psych rock here. The name translates to "Geometric Patterns" and that's how they're listed on Bandcamp. But I prefer the Japanese name. Apparently these guys put on one hell of a show. Their album should be "officially" out by now, but maybe not. Either way, I have it and I'm liking it quite a bit.)


Goat - Commune
(A bit overrated to tell you the truth, but still fun. I don't think SubPop is having its best year... Lots of ok records, and very few great ones. Right now only Shabazz Palaces and Avi Buffalo come to mind as being “great.” This record is good like Fölakzoid's II was good. It's satisfying, but it fails to achieve much in the way of real greatness.)

If that's what it is, I've got my work cut out for me. Anyone who knows me would laugh in my face at the futility of entering my entire music collection into a website. But it might be a helpful for my blogging efforts, which lack some crucial components that I have yet to identify.
