You can't say "I promised to never mention it again" out of the blue or remind people that you can't mention it. I usually take the route of getting really fucking angry at the one who brought it up.

As much as it irks you, it's far better to leave them seething in their own shit than to allow them to pile it onto you. The key to staying out of old arguements: Don't give a flying fuck, no matter what the consequence. Just smile and shrug. You're clean. Let them hate you for it if they're so keen on letting it come to that.

If you choose not to let it bother you, you'll be a happy person regardless of what they want to bring up. Their loss.

That's my avenue for 99% of subjects. There's maybe 2 or 3 that you just don't touch. No matter what. No matter whether or not you're my best friend, girlfriend, or a stranger off the street that knows what buttons to push.
