Tomorrow, February 3rd, is Bandcamp Friday. Tropical Fuck Storm/The Drones bassist (also Gareth Liddiard's wife, also babe of babes) Fiona Kitschin is battling stage three breast cancer :( and the band has had to cancel all shows. So: buy EVERYTHING by them!

https://tropicalfstorm.bandcamp.com/

https://thedrones.bandcamp.com/

https://thedronesremixed.bandcamp.com/

As for The Drones' "proper" albums, they're scattered among several different record labels, so some of them are hard to find and/or afford, but Amazon seems to have at least the brilliant Feelin Kinda Free in stock:

https://www.amazon.com/Feelin-Kinda-...dp/B01B9HAV9C/

Last but certainly not least, all proceeds from the sale of this new T-shirt go to TFS:

I was thinking about getting some vinyl's via bandcamp, but the shipping prices are so incredible, that it's not doable anymore. Buy a vinyl album worth of $25, the shipping will be more or less the same

Bandcamp aside, international shipping costs are all over the place nowadays. My mom just received a book from Greece - I checked the stamps and the guy who sent it only had to pay €3.90 for fast delivery. Sending an equivalent package from here to Greece costs... €32.59! The fuck is up with that? I don't know!

Instant Chavirés is on Bancamp. Here's a recording of an Okkyung Lee noise solo show from 2014:

Skuj 04.05.2023 08:30 PM

It suddenly hit me that I still know what a bandcamp is.

Skuj 04.05.2023 09:35 PM

I finally looked it up.

So, please tell me: Is there anything by Merzbow or Vomir on bandcamp, he asked, expecting the answer NO?

Skuj 04.05.2023 10:59 PM

I looked it up: Impressive. That shit is there.

As a dinosaur CD person, at a time when certain artists have refused to do CDs (fuck you Gizz), I begin to consider my options.

Plenty of CDs, vinyl and tapes on Bandcamp. Sometimes in editions of 50 copies, but whatchagon'do. :)

Skuj 04.06.2023 10:29 PM

Oh. I thought it was streaming.

It's streaming, it's download in the format of your choice, and (not always, but I would say more often than not) it's physical. Read the bloody page, dammit. ALSO: in a little over three hours, it'll be Bandcamp Friday, when BC waves its fees and the artists get mo' money, so if you're gonna buy something, now (well, in three hours and change) is the time.

Skuj 04.07.2023 12:03 AM

But I want to buy CDs. Bandcamp helps me do this?

I just went onto Amazon, and in Canadian dollars, shipping included, I got:

Flux Information Sciences - Private/Public - $15.48
Spirit Of The Beehive - ENTERTAINMENT, DEATH - $19.45

Bandcamp is better? (I need an account to find out, right?)

Nah, you can search for music and calculate shipping costs without an account.

I don't think Flux Information Sciences is on Bandcamp. Spirit Of The Beehive's ENTERTAINMENT, DEATH is, though, but you're F'd:

Christ on a stick! This is why I have all my shit shipped to the States first (shipping this CD to the US would cost you four bucks...)

Skuj 04.07.2023 12:35 AM

Ha! Look at that shipping. Thanks for this.

Well, I guess I'm still in bed with Mr Bezos.

That amount is completely fucked up and makes no sense at all. I was just checking a £27.00 double LP from the UK and the shipping cost to the US is £9.40.

Antagon 10.06.2023 04:47 PM

Signed and shared.

Bought a bunch of stuff via bandcamp yesterday.
Next to the already steep shipping costs they now also charge taxes for anything outside of my own country. Even for the new vinyl album of Bert Dockx from Belgium I had to pay 8 Euros for shipping & handling plus 6,55 Euros for taxes.
bloody hell wtf is up with that!

I also bought three vinyls of GGGOLDDD, the new EP + Shirt package, and their two older albums. Total shipping: 7 Euro, and no taxes :)
And pre-ordered the new Claire M Singer, on CD because there is no vinyl offered, with 5 pounds shipping and 3 pounds or taxes

They've laid off half of the staff; while the actual "hosting of independent music" thing should still stay the same it's likely going to demolish the editorials and blog coverage on the site.
Also, they plan on making it opt-in on artists to license their songs, so...things'll get rough. Fucking capitalists, man.

It It Anita – Mouche (cd, Vicious Circle / Luik Muziek)

If you're talking about the better contemporary noise bands, Belgian It It Anita should definitely not be missed. Founded in 2012, the group is pushing the envelope with music that on the one hand stirs in the barrel of the 90s and on the other hand manages to give it a twist in a contemporary, energetic and powerful way.
Besides one of the founding members, Michaël Goffard (guitar, vocals), the group currently consists of Elliot Stassen (bass, additional vocals) and Bryan Havart (drums), without Damien Aresta. One of the smallest line-ups, but you don't hear any of that on the already fifth album Mouche. In just under 40 minutes they present 9 new tracks, which do not lie. They have lost nothing of their power and energy as well as their eloquence, depth, urgency and compellingness and even seem stronger than ever.
If you like bands like Gone Bald, Drive Like Jehu, Sonic Youth, Unsane, Trumans Water, Godheadsilo, Metz, Vandal X and Further, you should definitely give It Anita a listen. How overwhelming, dirty and addictively good!

It It Anita – Mouche (cd, Vicious Circle / Luik Muziek)

well that was exactly my point. it was too good to last, its forever promises were hollow, and it was in fact designed to work at minimal (or negative?) profit to attract a mass of people that could be later "monetized."

the original idea without subsequent shittification was in theory good for platform users, but for long-term keeping with some sort of "values" the operation would need to be organized as something like a co-op rather than a for-profit business looking to maximize shareholder value.

the scorpion and the frog, and all that.

eta: see the now-classic youtube https://youtu.be/hpAMbpQ8J7g to understand the business model. or previous model, in any case.

==

eta for alternatives here you go: https://resonate.coop/coop/

of course without the profit motive it might never be as glossy as the sort of thing that drives consumers into purchasing paroxysms and spending orgies, but co-ops do important work (that is, when they work... because they don't always work), so there you go, try it maybe.

ps [later] looks ded :/

try again

ded. try again.

life is hard, and ease comes at a price :(

Kuhb 10.26.2023 05:53 PM

Co-ops are still subject to the same market forces. The model might delay the shitification, but ultimately market imperatives will have their way. 'Efficiency measures' will have to be taken. There will be necessary 'streamlining'.

yes but not necessarily all the way.

i've been a member of a several co-ops wherever i've lived and they manage to balance market pressures while providing good value to their members, while simultaneously practicing democratic management and labor practices, engaging community, supporting neighbors, etc. not always the cheapest deal in town, but often the least predatory one. sometimes even revolutionary.

here 4 maryland food co-ops
the radical one https://glut.org/ check out theirnhistory and about pages
the bougie one https://tpss.coop/
the little one by the river https://www.bethesdacoop.org/ nice after a bike ride or canoe trip or hike ahh those pies...

there are a bunch of other food co-ops around, and they are neither walmart nor whole foods.

anyway it's definitely not and easy feat and it requires members and workers and directors who can keep multiple objectives in play besides profit. sometimes, some co-ops do sell out or get taken over.

rei is a co-op! although it doesn't feel like one: https://www.motherjones.com/politics...union-busting/

--

however in the case of my current bank, which is a credit union (a co-op), i absolutely get the best deal money-wise, in part i think because my deposits don't have to pay for a ceo salary of $30000000 or other stupid nonsense so they don't load me with fees like the other rapacious fucks.

so there's some hope for co-ops--i'm not a total cynic lol. and i enjoy the dilectical process.
