Field Recordings From The Zone

by Lawrence English

Quote:

Almost an hour of heart-stopping location recordings made by Lawrence English in Queensland, Australia in the aftermath of a summer of intense bushfires and just as the lockdown started to re-shape lives globally earlier this year. These are technically brilliant and emotionally pregnant recordings from “The Zone”, a place we find ourselves in right now, where we just might still have time to reshape the world around us if we pause to acknowledge and address our own actions.

“Sometimes, we need to stop (everything) if we are going to start to realise new ways of being in this world. Field Recordings from The Zone is a contemplation of this proposition. The title is a nod to the speculative fiction of Arkady and Boris Strugatsky; their text a perfect parallel to appreciate the uncertainties of what may lie ahead. It is also a study of the world in these moments of radical public action. The work seeks to recognise that to take our acquired methodologies, knowledge and habituated lives forward without examination reduces the possible futures that splinter infinitely before us.

We are already in The Zone even if we refuse (or fail) to recognise it. It is a place that bares marks of familiarity but maintains a restless psychogeography that can shift without warning. Ecopolitical terraforming becomes ever more plausible. The unknown (and in some cases the unknowable) haunt this place like ecstatic spectres, inviting our investigation, our curiosity and ultimately demanding our intellect. These months have been just a glimpse of the relentless dynamism that will be our lives going forward into the next millennium. This dynamism requires radical positions of thought, of generosity, of optimism and of course, radical listening, as the world’s whispers rise in amplitude.

P.S. (June 2020) And then, it was from this quiet that so many voices rose up in unison, calling together to work against systematic racism in our respective countries. If ever a sound could be as beautifully compelling as the quiet, then surely this harmonised unity is it."

The Best Experimental Music on Bandcamp: September 2020

The Soup Nazi 09.30.2020 07:33 PM

New message from Good Music:

Quote:

We’re very excited to announce ‘Good Music To Avert The Collapse Of American Democracy, Volume 2’ – another compilation made up entirely of previously-unreleased recordings from some of the most important names in music today. The second volume features never-before-heard new songs, covers, remixes, live versions, and unreleased demos from incredible artists across many genres. The collection will be available for 24 hours only, exclusively via Bandcamp this Friday, October 2nd starting at 12:01am PT.

All net proceeds from the album’s sales will go to Voting Rights Lab (votingrightslab.org), a nonpartisan 501(c)(3) organization working to help secure, protect, and defend the voting rights of all Americans in the upcoming 2020 U.S. election.

Volume 2 follows the success of Volume 1, which raised over $250,000 for voters' rights work during its 24-hour release on September 4th – thank you to everyone who previously supported via Volume 1! Despite the overwhelming enthusiasm from artists who contributed to this new installment and resulted in nearly twice as many tracks, we've decided to keep the pricing the same as last time at $20.20... if you are able, please consider donating more for Volume 2 via Bandcamp's pay more option.

We'll also be offering a limited-edition poster designed and signed by Sofia Coppola on Friday via Bandcamp to raise additional funds, also going to Voting Rights Lab. The poster and compilation album will be sold separately.

Got a few more details from this site:

Quote:

GMTATCOAD Volume Two, like its predecessor, features never-before-heard new songs, covers, remixes, live versions, and unreleased demos. The comp also features David Byrne's demo for the Joan of Arc: Into The Musical musical; an unearthed recording from the late John Prine; a Postal Service live recording from their lauded 2013 reunion tour; Mark Ronson and Isley Juber's Bond Theme submission; and more. Like Volume One, the compilation also features incredible covers, with both Yola and Feist taking on Nina Simone songs; Yeah Yeah Yeahs covering Atlas Sound; Phoenix covering Whitney; and more.

In addition to the above, artists on Volume 2 include Sturgill Simpson, The Gossip, Little Dragon, Bright Eyes, Perfume Genius, Big Boi and Sleepy Brown, Chicano Batman, Black Pumas, Jason Isbell & the 400 Unit, Arcade Fire, YOKO ONO PLASTIC ONO BAND, Faye Webster, Nilüfer Yanya, Jenny Lewis, Tenacious D, Jack Johnson, The War On Drugs, Fleet Foxes, Charly Bliss, Girlpool, MUNA, Flume and Toro Y Moi, Matt and Kim, Mexican Institute of Sound, Nick Hakim, and many, many more.

New release from Unwound:

Quote:

7/26/2001

Unwound reunited in July of 2001 with original drummer Brandt Sandeno for a quick run through their old songs at Olympia’s Phoenix Street House. A decade removed from their post-hardcore roots, with heaps of technical proficiency to go around, the trio blazed through their debut album and a few Giant Henry cuts for a select number of Olympians, just prior to the release of their final album, Leaves Turn Inside You.

Please correct me if I'm wrong: this archival release really is new, right? I can't find a Discogs entry or summat. Available for two bucks!

Children in Cages
by Marisa Anderson and Sophie Trudeau

All sales from this track will be donated to No More Deaths, a humanitarian organization based in Tucson, Arizona. The mission of No More Deaths is to end death and suffering in the Mexico–US borderlands through civil initiative: people of conscience working openly and in community to uphold fundamental human rights. Their work focuses on the following themes:

Direct aid that extends the right to provide humanitarian assistance
Witnessing and responding
Consciousness raising
Global movement building
Encouraging humane immigration policy

No More Deaths maintains a year-round humanitarian presence in the deserts of southwestern Arizona. They work in the remote corridors into which migration has been pushed, where people are walking 30 to 80 miles. Volunteers hike the trails and leave water, food, socks, blankets, and other supplies. Under the direction of their medical team, volunteers provide emergency first-aid treatment to individuals in distress.

In northern Sonora, No More Deaths provides phone calls and first aid to deportees and northbound migrants. They have an informal check-cashing service for those deported with an uncashable prison check. To those planning to cross the desert, they distribute simple tools for reducing damage to health.

Volunteers research, document, and expose patterns of abuse against people crossing the border at the hands of Border Patrol and other government agencies.

They minister to incarcerated migrants and their families by helping them recover their personal effects from the US Border Patrol, belongings that would otherwise be lost. No More Deaths picks them up, safeguards them, and mails them home.

No More Deaths responds to emergency calls and mobilizes search teams when Border Patrol and local law enforcement refuse to respond and they work in coalition with border communities to resist militarization.

An Update on Bandcamp Fridays

On the first Friday of every month since March, we’ve waived our revenue share to help support the many artists who have seen their livelihoods disrupted by the pandemic. Over the course of these nine days, fans paid artists and labels $40 million dollars, helping cover rents, mortgages, groceries, medications, and much more. If you’re among the nearly 800,000 fans who participated, thank you.

Although vaccines are starting to roll out, it will likely be several months before live performance revenue starts to return. So we’re going to continue doing Bandcamp Fridays in 2021, on February 5th, March 5th, April 2nd, and May 7th. As always, isitbandcampfriday.com has the details.

If you’ve started to feel guilty about buying music on any day other than Bandcamp Friday, here’s something to keep in mind: on Bandcamp Fridays, an average of 93% of your money reaches the artist/label (after payment processor fees). When you make a purchase on any other day of the month (as 2.5 million of you have since March, buying an additional $145 million worth of music and merch) an average of 82% reaches the artist/label. Every day is a good day to directly support artists on Bandcamp!

Little promotion/recommendation here:

Eric Arn, an acquaintance of mine (and founder of the band A Thousand Threads plays in) is releasing his third solo album today. He's been an incredibly prolific artist for over 3 decades now and his projects have spanned two continents. One of them even opened up for the Youf once, would you know.

Today, "Higher Order" is out. A wonderful album that treads that fine line between Fingerstyle Americana, classic Blues stylings, Acoustic Psychedelia, Folk and even Drone - always with a certain playfulness. I figure it may be up some of your alleys.

If you're in the U.S., you can purchase it here

Later tonight I will be adding a new release: Three Chords and a Sword: Solo Cover Versions, 1988-2021. This is a collection of rather peculiar cover songs I've done over the years, the earliest being Suicide's Rocket USA (done during the Love Child demo 4-track sessions in 1988) and the most recent being three songs recorded at home last month (Van Halen's Jump, Palace Brothers' "Stable Will", and Sonic Youth's "Tom Violence"). Three others are from live sets in the 90s and 00s. I don't know of any other album of covers by a single performer that has this wide a timespan of recording--but anyway, please check it out.

Title TK

Not to be confused with the Breeders' third album ...

Quote:

Title TK (Alan Licht, Howie Chen, Cory Arcangel) is a banter-only band.
Pioneers of "talk rock, the ultimate sub-genre, where the band format is retained but music-making is discarded in favor of conversation between the band members (mostly music-nerd discourse and celebrity gossip). All releases are non-audio but comes with a pdf of a transcribed conversation. RIYL: Spinal Tap

they are selling a limited edition of 50 cassette, titled
Metallic TK

Quote:

Title TK's first ever audio release! A cassette in a strictly limited edition of 50 copies. Metallic TK documents our most recent--and most raucous--performance, at the Lausanne Underground Film Festival in October 2019. Cory and Alan were there in person, Howie Skyped in. We went on at 2 in the morning, after a full schedule of electronic noise artists, and whoever was left in the audience was either wasted or an insomniac (or both). At any rate, it was the most polarized reaction in the group's history, which is saying something. Usually at a Title TK show, the audience experiences the seven stages of grief--shock and denial, pain and guilt, anger and bargaining, depression, the upward turn, reconstruction, and acceptance and hope--but in this case they just stopped at anger. You will hear us being pelted and heckled, but what you can't see is a punter running onstage to try to shut down the laptop Howie was visible on, or the one who was twerking in the audience. It makes Iggy and the Stooges' infamous Metallic KO live bootleg--which our tape's design is based on--look like Frampton Comes Alive.

1 copy per customer. No future release in any other format, be it vinyl, CD, download or streaming--the only way to hear Metallic TK, ever, is to buy the cassette while supplies last. less

only 8 are left right now, so jump on it fast if you want one still!

And whoever wrote this about Noveller sez:

Quote:

Combining her love of all things Twin Peaks with her emotive guitar playing, attention to detail and cinematic instincts, Noveller delivers something truly delicate and haunting and precious with her cover of Angelo Badalamenti’s theme song for the show.

Continuing their string of video collaborations, Sarah Lipstate draws the somber notes out in front of director George Griffith’s watchful camera. Griffith’s name should awaken Twin Peaks fans, as the actor/director memorably portrayed the devilish right hand man Ray Monroe in Twin Peaks: The Return. The pair traveled to Washington, visiting landmarks from the show and filming in the recreated Black Lodge of superfan Jason Mattson. Mattson sourced and built everything for the room on his own, and did so with such perfection that the Showtime production actually used his chair for filming. Lipstate settles into the exact same spot that Kyle MacLachlan couldn’t seem to leave as Agent Dale Cooper.

The video, with a surprise ending, is a clear love letter to the program, yet Lipstate’s magnetic presence takes center stage. Her instrumental version, working from the guitar arrangement by Arrigo Martelli, finds emotional depth and a tentative apprehension that even the original could only hint at.

Released exclusively for Bandcamp Friday, Twin Peaks Theme is backed with a Red Room remix, and is available immediately for download and a limited vinyl release.
