Thurston's poetry reminds of those biker films where Sonny Barger and Co. are giving us the benefit of their thoughts..."I look in the sky/Catches my eye/To Be so High/On The Road/Free Like A Toad/Ready to unload/The rules and ways/Of the Man these days/Purple Haze/The senses all phase/The broad's hot gaze/End of days/Erotic praise".

sarramkrop 05.01.2007 08:22 AM

Kim Gordon said at the time of Coco's birth that she was never gonna become one of those of musicians who write all the songs about her daughter, and then you read that they recorded Rather Ripped with Coco in mind, or something along those lines. Your children should be kept out of your own creative process , mainly because you're selling records to a majority made up of childless people, so they can't relate to that sort of thing as well as you think they might. Nothing against kids, or having them, don't get me wrong.

ZEROpumpkins 05.01.2007 08:28 AM

Yeah Lee is my favourite from SY.

MellySingsDoom 05.01.2007 08:34 AM

Marvin Gaye's "Sexual Healing" is a truly horrible song. What a way to blot his copybook.

sarramkrop 05.01.2007 08:42 AM

Babies are the new Yoko Onos .

pantophobia 05.01.2007 08:47 AM

well Kim sure has been influenced, but i don't think she has written any lyrics specifically about her, unlike coco's father

i was listening to some sister, and stereo sanctity was on, and those lyrics were quite cutting, and i think much has to do with the delivery of the lyrics more then the words themselves, sort of like Radical Adults Lick Godhead Style, while the words themselves don't appear to be much, the way he sings them really propels the song

so he should write lyrics which he can be good at, and not poetry to music, like pink steam

sarramkrop 05.01.2007 08:52 AM

Joyce Sims' Come Into My Life is one of the best songs ever written.

I've always thought this thread invited the sort of shit I'm about to engage in right now. To write that Pet Sounds sucks is pretty fucked. Yes, Elvis Costello's best album is the first one with The Attractions, This Year's Model. Not that I care all that much about Elvis Costello.

As far as the noise hybrid bands go, they are one of the best, if not the best.

People who rank Pet Sounds in their top three or so might be overrating it perhaps.
The Beach Boys are a fine group.

Me too, it's inescapable.

Those two weren't all bad back in the day, but I can't stand Green Day.

The Fall can be extremely boring at times, and the opposite at other times.

I guess they were good at what they did initially because it was slightly more novel then, but overall, I agree.

I'm not the hugest Nirvana-worshipper or anything, but to remark that you are glad Cobain is dead shows very little character on your part. Toodle-loo, fuckface.

sonicl 05.01.2007 09:16 AM

I prefer Swans after Children of God to Swans before Children of God.

I think I do too. Earlier Swans may be their most raw, but it doesn't hold up to repeated listenings like say, early Sonic Youth.

Children of God and after is a somewhat friendlier sound, less raw, but also somehow even more bombastic with the dynamics there with Jarboe. Of course, they went acoustic or otherwise stripped-down later.

I can't stand James Taylor. That music has no balls. It's as bad as some jazz fusion...fucking elevator music.

Bob Dylan sucks? Look, you may not like Bob Dylan, and that's your own demented prerogative (and your own loss), but please, realize you make yourself look stupid when you write that "Bob Dylan sucks..."

Yeah, maybe you're someone that can't handle drugs.

ALIEN ANAL This message is hidden because ALIEN ANAL is on your ignore list.

Massassinated 05.01.2007 10:08 AM

I don't like John Zorn and Mike Patton.
I don't like the Stooges.
The Beach Boys were somewhat boring. I'm not a big fan of Bob Dylan neither.
Trout mask replica is a good album, but not a timeless masterpiece.
Blonde Redhead's last album is boring and uninteresting.
Faust's self-titled album was a masterpiece, but Faust so far is very poor imho.
I can't listen to Borbetomagus and Diamanda Galas.
Recent Autechre albums are better than early ones.
Grateful Dead are overrated.

Flog me.

ALIEN ANAL 05.01.2007 10:09 AM

i dont dig mike patton either, cant stand his voice.

sarramkrop 05.01.2007 10:16 AM

Aphex Twin is overrated. He hasn't put out half a decent record in years, but some people still talk about him like he's some sort of Mozart. Besides, Raymond Scott or Pierre Henry did some of that electronic stuff better than him and way before him.

Good call on The Heads. I hadn't heard of them and my friend played me one of their records the other day and it was pretty damn good.

sarramkrop 05.01.2007 10:39 AM

Awesome. Smelly, do you have this one? It kicks butt.

sarramkrop - I don't have that, but damn, that's a sho nuff funky cover. Looks like another one to add to the wants list.

Most electro-punk/punk-funk we have around is abysmal art faggotry and I hope their radio shows are taken off the air and their art galleries burnt down.

leys forget that you said that mr bungle suck and motzart is overatwed. its all moot because you said that the smiths, can, zorn are underatted. now dont get me wrong i love all of those bands (especially can and zorn, very very much) but underated?
ther smityhs have sold millions of records, can i can understand. but zorn. he wonm the mackarthur genious award last year. doesnt that make you "rated"
hjow much more rated can you be that to be awarded 100 grand for five years, simply to continue to be a genious?

pbradley 05.01.2007 12:21 PM

And saying the Butthole Surfers are overrated is a difficult claim considering how early material is the only stuff worth really mentioning. Do you mean the early albums? Or are you saying the band's whole career? Because if it is the latter, I'm sure a lot of people will agree.

Mr. Bungle I'd liken to spending an eternity in a "special" class with kids who spend their breaks spinning around in circles watching the mittens attatched to their jackets going round and round.

The Smiths are one of those bands that are so ace that they're aceness is independent of however many mere humans love them.

Yes, John Zorn has been recognised as a genius which is something that was bound to happen. This doesn't stop him from being far too underappreciated and underlistened. 11 year olds should be making Zorn #1 in the charts.

And for the love of merciless God, why can't you spell?

Good call on This Heat, C93, Kayo Dot and Toby Driver.
Can are great and underlistened but not underrated being widely hailed as a great and influential band by rock critics.

Cardinal Rob 05.01.2007 02:33 PM

I must say for this case CAN and Pink Floyd's positions on the -rated scale must be switched, except Pink Floyd have a reasonable amount hate at their position, which CAN of course should never have. Yes though, us smart ones do put CAN where they deserve it.

And liking Kayo Dot too! I bid thee the best of days!

Apologies. I got confused with the covers of the albums (as you can see they like orange and red on their artwork), so i've thought that that was the album by The Heads in my possesion. After nearly dropping a big pile of cds on me, i've found it and here it is. It's called 'Under Sided' and it's on Sweet Nothing.I couldn't find the image on google , so i've scanned it. If you don't have it, i'll up it:
