having a bit of a blonde redhead retrospective today.

and so while reading about what they've doing lately i found out that a chunk of an old song had become "a savage new meme" :D (not so new anymore but eh)

https://www.vice.com/en/article/9kgy...avage-new-meme

i've heard that on rick and morty but had no idea about the aftermath. very funny.

Meara O'Reilly - Hockets For Two Voices. Amazing! Recommended if you like: awesome shit! Lee praised it to the top of Mount Olympus last year - was it mentioned here? I searched for it and came up with squat, but given that the board is half-broken...

The title track is said to be about the invasion of Aghanistan... the previous one, that is, by the USSR. Another explanation is that it's a Dog Day Afternoon-like hostage situation, with the protagonist literally shooting out the lights of the building so he can't be seen from the outside. Could be both. What a song, what a masterful album. And on the cover of an LP plagued by, among other light matters, a marriage going to hell, back-stabbing prostitutes, walls of death, a woman "lying in a pool of herself" after she jumped-or-was-pushed-depends-on-who-you-ask, and an overwhelming, crippling restlessness —but hey, "only the pain [keeps] you sane and gives you a mind to travel on" so "don't worry, 'cause under the ocean, at the bottom of the sea, you can't hear the storm, it's as peaceful as can be" (!)— RT appears smiling, because of course he is. It's not necessarily ironic; there is, after all, a kind of life-affirming force among all this horror. In any case, let that be a lesson to mooks worldwide and their Dark Serious Issue Poses on the covers of their boring-ass records.

Incidentally, "Shoot Out The Lights" was splendidly covered by Thompson fanatic Bob Mould on his See A Little Light EP:

Whilst making burgers yesterday. This and More Songs About Buildings And Food have sort of become my go-to soundtrack for cooking sessions.

I still have that textured album jacket (and the spooky inner sleeve). No cooking sessions for me, though - can't do anything while a record is on...

LOW - HEY WHAT.
Baby Keem - The Melodic Blue
Little Simz - Sometimes I Might be Introvert
Joy Orbison - still slipping vol. 1

"War On War". "Jesus, etc". "Ashes Of American Flags". The album came out in 2002, but all those songs were ready before 9/11. Don't ask me how Jeff did it.

And then...

the new Mono album is pretty good, but I still love their older work much more so I listened to this one again:

Bought new headphones, the Marshall Monitor II ANC, so I'm relistening my fav albums with it. It has good sound, I do think it lacks a bit of punch. Must try out some more loud music, so later today I'll listen to some BEHEMOTH, the God's Pee song, not the band ...

My luscious locks are far more irresistible. But I do wear the same bra, it's complementary.

Commuting by train to work now a few days a week, and using that time to listen to albums that ended up on my PC years ago but were never really heard. Featuring today:

- Crosby & Nash. Live SBD recording from when I saw them in Brussels in 2011. Sounds great, their voices not so good on some songs
- the Tragically Hip - Now For Plan A. One of their weaker albums but has some good songs
- Stars Of The Lid - The Ballasted Orchestra. Didn't really like it and didn't finish it

And to wake me up:
- God's Pee - Asunder, Sweet And Other Distress aka Behemoth

it's very confusing to listen to this album, because I choose the first track as a ringtone. This morning I was listening to the album and the whole time I was asking myself whether or not the phone was ringing ....

It still amazes me that I had never heard of them until this album was released. Their '89 concert is still a highlight in my gigograhy.

Mess Esque (Helen Franzmann and Dirty Three's Mick Turner) - "Sweetspot". From their upcoming self-titled debut album, out October 22. Really freakin' good (_tunic_, are you diggin' it or what?). Perhaps this is what Cat Power should have sounded like when she "went soul".

As much as I like Dirty Three, I still can't get used to Mick's guitar noodling. And I didn't like her voice so much. So I'm passing on it for now.

I was listening to this the other day:

very intriguing, even though it gets a bit too much at times.

Guided By Voices - Propeller (the album with a kalamazillion different covers!)

!@#$%! 11.05.2021 03:17 PM

listened earlier to the new bat fangs.

a first for me, i have not heard the previous album. but i like it some. i think if they stopped singing in unison, or better yet stop singing altogether and played their instruments, i could love this band's 80s homages. "psychic eye" the best track for me--a good jam.

now back to this old album (old already! lol. time is weird.)

it's funny to talk about time with this band though, not trying to sound corny but it's like they're timeless. not timeless with a capital t, just... they're their own thing, could be from the 60s or 70s or some other musical era.
