overall as an album it's pretty bad and i can hear bad u2 imitations all over it

listening to this is homework: 90s anthropology

i'll keep the single though-- and then toss the now-dated, forgettable rest

What, "Creep"? The song is ass. "Blow Out" is the only tune I'd rescue if someone pointed a gun to my head, but it's still weak. They did get better, but they're still not decent enough for me to care. In addition, god-damn they're annoying... Dude, is this anthropological project really necessary? And if so, isn't it going off the rails? :D

!@#$%! 02.24.2021 10:14 PM

creep is memorable and sticky in the head. and it's funny to sing aloud making ridiculously histrionic voices. so i keep it for the lols. similar to beck's "loser" ha ha ha.

anthropology: i was never into them although they were popular. so i subjected myself to the sacrificial torment--for knowledge!

now i can speak authoritatively haaahaaaahaaaaaa

next: smashing pumpkins lmfao. no! hard pass.

No circumstance at all justifies listening to Smashing Pumpkins.

choc e-Claire 02.25.2021 01:11 AM

please, like anything you like is better than 'Soma'.

r.e. !@#$%!: a solid half of Pablo Honey is good stuff - 'Creep' is great as mentioned, 'Blow Out' is also great, but stuff like 'You' and 'Stop Whispering' is also quite fun. Plus the songs generally come out much better live. Still easily Radiohead's worst.

Anyway: The Depreciation Guild - In Her Gentle Jaws

eta but ok they had more years to mature at that point. nevertheless... it's a whole album. coherent, no filler, great.

now there is some good shit here...especially when you can't hear the singing.

a lot of great music is ruined by singing. please shut up whenever possible and play your fucking instrument :D

you're forgetting "Lurgee"! Such an underrated gem of a song. I used to love it so much when I was like 16 or so. Going around the town with an old walkman (yes, it was 90s), listening to the crappy 2nd tape copy of this album and bathing in the spring sun ... yes.

Btw, Radiohead's worst is King of Limbs, not this album.

I've never really gotten into Lurgee that much; I can appreciate it but it just seems like a bad Bends song even more so than the rest of Pablo. (The band seemed to like it though, they were still playing it occasionally into 2003.)

No, no it isn't. TKOL may be weak, but Pablo is filled with some utter shite beyond the good tracks.

_tunic_ 02.25.2021 06:44 AM

Lol, here's a 13 year old Jimmy Page playing Skiffle!!

I'm listening to myself :p

Tunic on Audiotree Live (Full Session)

I should tell myself to sing more and scream less, but musically I'm quite good if I say so myself

(no this is not me, but a Canadian band, the picture is taken from their bandcamp)

Exactly. And TKOL is utter shite with no good tracks. Do the math.

I'm sorry, Morning Mr. Magpie? Little by Little? Codex? Not to mention the great B-sides from that era.

That said, if I want an electronic Radiohead album I'll just listen to Hail to the Thief.

Up to 204 albums for the year :D

XD

anyway, blowout starts great and then suddenly turns into a poor imitation of bono. fail for me.

lurgee, goes directly to poor bono imitation. the guitar is kinda sweet though, i can see liking it, and the soundtrack to one's adolescence is a special thing, so of course, who am i to say.

nevertheless, ive had creep in my head all day and was even looking for covers online. and whether one likes it or not, that's a distinctive and original and memorable song, and you hear it and you instantly know who it is and when it was from, and that particular signature is why it endures, unlike the others tracks in that album.

i'd like to watch soupnazi's reaction of billie eilish covering it hahaaahaaahaa. i mean, i found some fakes online, so some people must be desperate for it? it's coming... (unless it already exists and i missed it?)

eta: oh yes hahahhahahhaa.

Scala is great, I saw them live once and it was beautiful. This is my favorite song Crystalline Skies, too bad there's no live version of it on YT.
That's one of their own songs, they also do many covers, such as this one: Barbiegirl. Fucking brilliant!!! And here's a live version of Creep

Here's a full concert that I'll be watching now: https://youtu.be/vP3jp4Ji298
(edit: yes I'm skipping some songs, but there are some gems here, especially Evigheden)

Thanks for the reminder!

_tunic_ 02.26.2021 04:03 AM

I hadn't heard Scala for some time, but whenever I do listen to them, in the end I get a craving to hear this

thanks! i had no idea. i came at this from the film angle, but after listening to your links i enjoy the subtle deconstruction they perform with the songs they cover.

anyway now after a day-long detour with various choral ensembles i'm back to 1993 :D

That's technically impossible, the video is of November 2020 :p

This song was released yesterday. It's not the song of the year for me, but it's mighty impressive, and a cool video as well:
Big Brave - Half Breed

Perhaps I should just move to Montreal! So much fine music coming from that town!

the theme of today:

live album
female vocals
loud fuzzy doom guitars

Open to suggestions...

Damn, the B52's and 90s bachelor pad music revival in the guise of Trip-Hop/Plunderphonics have sent me down a rabbit hole.
All that's missing is a garishly colored drink in hand and maybe some Saturday morning cartoon visuals. :D

Maybe it's about time contemporary music incorporate some space age elements again.
But instead of emulating the bouffant-aesthic and running the risk of glorifying era-conforming sexist tropes, go for some really out there
animated music videos set in space or something. Modern electronica + space age giddyness - I'd be down for that.

^ Ugh, what a disappointment. Otherwise competent musicianship ruined by unfocused songwriting and drab vocal stylings. On the paper, this should be something I love, hell it even has several seemless segues from one track into the next and is very cohesive structurally - stuff I'm usually a sucker for. Too bad I don't care enough for the songs to really be enthralled by that. Hard pass.

I have always been amazed at how RH went from this to OKC in just 4 years.
