Ha ha. Well, as tempting as a conceptual Freddie-hattrick may sound on paper, I'd rather not. But I might just put on A Night At The Opera one of these days. I have some very fond memories of that particular album.

For now:

Loveless, but backwards using Audacity. Closest I'm going to get to ever being a stoner.

Soon I'll have to try the Kid 17 thing that I saw in an old thread.

Department Store Santas – Live at the Medieval Castle
The Departmentstore Santas' LP is an underground rock classic of the highest order – from its carnivalesque front cover to the sixteen home-schooled tracks contained inside. Information about this mysterious band has been as scarce as original copies of their self-released album, yet purveyors of lo-fi pop esoterica have whispered about the Santas' raison d'etre for the better part of the past three decades.

Recorded in the early '80s in La Mesa, California, At The Medieval Castle Nineteen 100-Year Lifetimes Since features quirky sing-alongs, wide-eyed lyrics, echoey instrumentals and outsider folk-punk à la Daniel Johnston. While bandleader Joseph D'Angelo's unique charm may not fit comfortably in any one style, his preternatural world is united by the warmth and grit of these bedroom recordings.

Out of step with other music of its era, Departmentstore Santas uncannily anticipated the 4-track movement of the '90s. This first-time reissue is recommended for fans of Television Personalities, Guided By Voices and Cleaners From Venus.

Sometimes I feel so bad

And because it's a great companion piece to the final Miranda Sex Garden Outing in terms of sound and atmosphere:

Didn't intend to listen to this today, but I just now realized the two of them go together quite nicely. Plus, it's a fucking awesome album, so why not?

Because it turned 30 two days ago. And because it's a magnificent piece of well-produced Pop music.

ah, shit, that was way more than well-produced pop, in its day

a bit of a religious text, in a way. a myth even.

they had been at it for a while but that year nobody could say “no” anymore

True. It's an amazing album, incredibly inspired and cohesive. Love it to bits. And while the general consensus seems to be leaning towards universal acclaim, I feel like it's sometimes dismissed by people who are into 80s Post-Punk for being part of their more Pop-oriented years. But that's exactly why I like it. Love their early stuff as well, talking the Faith, Seventeen Seconds and Pornography era, but for different reasons. Because damnit, they could write Pop. Disintegration is Pop with all its strengths (memorable hooks, lovely arrangements, etc.) and pretty much none of its weaknesses. This isn't just Pop, it's fucking great Pop. Legendary Pop even. Early Cure and their approach Mid-80s and onward were two different things altogether and they both got a lot going for them for different reasons. And damn, that slowly diminishing arrangement of "Untitled" just makes for one of the most perfect closers I've ever heard. So if I call it a magnificent piece of well-produced Pop, I mean this in the most enthusiastic way possible.

i guess pop in a way, although i tend to think of pop as a chirpier, danceable, catchy happier stuff, and this record is a return to the cure’s darker roots. in a way, in pop culture history, they prefigure (with a different sound) the gloom that seattle would later make mainstream in a more rockist way. there are always emotional currents in various directions in the culture, and while earlier cure certainly had a following, it was their poppier melodies that got them mainstream attention. but this was “fuckit, no more lovecats”. (i like lovecats, don’t get me wrong, but this album has a very different emotional content). anyway you got me listening again hahaha thanks. 30 years flies by, wtf is this time machine. so strange...
