Each track on Rhizosphere inhabits its own mini-universe sonically and emotionally. The range of moods traversed is stunning. The only other human being on Rhizosphere is drummer François Auger, who accompanies Pinhas on the title track. The escalating arc of its 18-minute run plays like a moonbound rocket-trip, with pulsing synth and roaming percussion made all the more otherworldly by the decision to filter Auger's cymbals through an AKS modular synthesizer. - Forced Exposure

I lucked into a copy of that about 10 years back. It's a great one. Pinhas in general provides quite a deep and rewarding rabbit hole.

Oh, I can not fuck with that record. It sounds like The Verve playing in the style of Elton John to me.

One time I saw Cat Power and she sucked so much I’m pretty sure she was asked to leave the stage. I can’t remember what the show was exactly, but she was opening for someone — maybe Sleater-Kiney? — and she seemed drunk and just fucked off through like three songs, at least one of which was a cover, and then left after someone popped out to whisper in her ear.

I’d say that was painful. At the time I was very into Cat Power and was pumped to see her live. Didn’t expect her to sound like an actual cat. I was supper pissed at what a waste of time it had been.

Cat Power has a long history of being a douchebag on stage. breaking off songs midway sorry sorry sorry saying a lot, walking offstage for whatever reason. Especially I guess 10-15 years ago.

I understand, but if it's a genuine meltdown, if it's a spontaneous fuckup, I'm in. (No wonder I'm also a Replacements fan). The one thing I will not tolerate is someone going through the motions and/or playing their music exactly as it's on their albums, to the point of making you feel you could be home listening to their tunes and it wouldn't make any difference.

I would have loved to have been to that show. And :fuckyou: for having seen Sleater-Kinney live, which I still haven't had the chance to. :mad::D

The affectation in the vocals was awful and made me not want to be there. The audience also made me feel very much like I shouldn't be there. It's just not my thing at all.

You're not wrong! It has a "Shiny Happy People" vibe to it, or something from Oceancolourscene, maybe vaguely mid-eighties.

The title seems a reference to the fact that we're looking at the bottom of the barrel as far as unknown punk records are concerned, but whoever was responsible for the digging that unearthed these gems certainly struck some gold. Most of the sixteen records comped here are sleeveless, and the few others have horribly un-punk sleeves (Ducky Boys being the exception though I guess the Exit sleeve isn’t too bad) which, along with low pressings, helps make sense of how these tunes remained under the radar for so long. Astute collectors may recognize The Grackles, whose name has been popping up on want lists in the last few years, but their appearance here is the first chance for most to actually hear the record. "Who Needs Wildlife Anyway" is a solid addition to the canon of "KBD classics"—from Albuquerque, NM, far from anything close to a punk scene, the tune is cluelessly over the top with lyrics to match ("Who needs wildlife anyway? / All they do is eat oats and hay / All they do is run around and play"). It's a shame that the MP3s I heard of the other songs didn't compare. The biggest surprise on the comp is Mind Games, who haven't been spotted on any want lists (until tomorrow). Their classically SoCal punk homage to "Get Smart" leads me to believe that those guys currently spend many hours watching Nick at Nite. Perhaps my favorite song on the record, and the one that I'll end up chasing down until I own, is the Ducky Boys' "Hooked on Junk." It's an undeniably possessed track that's young, loud, and snotty enough that it makes the Dead Boys sound like Stiv's solo records. Yow. Other winners include Chicago punk thuggery by JT IV; a great Damned-influenced track from Neck Tie Party; and The Ones, yet another great punk-edged basher in classic Milwaukee fashion. The record is not without fault: the Principles track sounds like a Cheech and Chong outtake (funny the first few times but a regular ‘skipper’); Scarecrows is a failed attempt at humor and lacks any remarkable tune; and I still don't understand why Screaming Sneakers haven't landed a spot on one of these comps— pop or not they smoke the Psychotic Frogs. All in all, "Staring Down the Barrel" is a great comp that should shut up anyone who thinks that all the great punk records have already been discovered. - www.nostages.com

I believe they’re just below Modest Mouse and Flaming Lips on my “most seen bands” list. Seen them more than I’ve seen Sonic Youth.

But yeah. I get it about going through the motions. Actually, when I saw the Pixies in ‘04, that’s pretty much what they did. It was super disappointing. Not a poorly played show or a bad show, just — meh. Like someone was blasting a 25-song playlist through stadium speakers and four people were just standing there lip-syncing. And I was SO looking forward to some kind of transcendent experience.

I am listening to 13 at the moment (incoming Severian), and it's definitely rising in my ranking of Blur albums. Don't think it's my favourite, but it's definitely in the top three.

I also love that, even while they're stripping away every 'pop' thing they can find and covering it with electronica and feedback fuzz, the songs all have recognisable hooks and choruses.

“Bugman” is just pop deep fried in electro-scuzz :)

Great album.

It certainly is, at this point I'm trying to decide whether I like it more or less than the self-titled. Parklife is, and probably always will be, the number 1.
