the one from the side is better but there are closeups where you can see the massive swords sinking into chiellini's shoulder.

Fucking Suarez is probably one of the dirtiest players in futbol history. Why do people lick his nuts? Dude should be booed out of the game, period.

I mean come on, cheating in big League matches? Check. Cheating in WC elimination matches? Check. Cheating in MULTIPLE WC elimination matches? Three strikes and you're out motherfucker!

Honestly, I don't wanna sound like a contrarian here but I loved it. Until Uruguay scored I thought Italy were playing a perfect defensive game. Not spectacular but still brilliant. But to play like that without the cushion of a goal was a massive risk that in the end backfired.

Until then (more in response to Suchfriends) it wasn't about what Uruguay was or wasn't doing, but about the way for 80 minutes Italy totally controlled the game.

And then Suarez tried to eat Chiellini and provided more entertainment value than any goal I think I've ever seen. Although if FIFA prove he did bite him, that must mean a ban for the rest of the tournament ... and about a thousand new memes to replace the Ivanovich ones.

But yeah, honestly it was a game I could've watched for hours ... cannibalism or no cannibalism

Precisely. Although while I had no no problem with Uruguay beating them, the thing I loved about it so much was the way Italy dictated everything - until the end, obviously. It was the most classically 'Italian' performance we've seen so far ... far more than the one against England. If you wanted to show anyone the strengths of the Italian style you could show the first 80 minutes, then show all of it to show its potential flaw. Loved it. But then I do love Italy when they're being 'Italy', even to a fault.

Irony is Prandelli is a very 'un-Italian' mananger that'll probably be sacked (edit: just heard he's already gone) after his team played a typically 'Italian' game.

SuchFriendsAreDangerous 06.24.2014 03:04 PM

We all clearly love futbol for very contrastingly different reasons, but at least we all clearly love it mutually :)

!@#$%! 06.24.2014 03:15 PM

if you like fast attacking football tune in to colombia-japan

attack vs. attack and japan wants to score!

--

but colombia gets the penalty!

--

and cuadrado scores with a cañonazo

mang this colombians are a joy to watch

they are gonna kick uruguay's ass if suarez does not play

SuchFriendsAreDangerous 06.24.2014 03:25 PM

I'm watching Ivory Coast because clearly as CONCACAF follower I like defensive teams.. But yeah, Japan is fucking damned good at attacking with speed. I like them, but I want to watch Ivory Coast in case this is their last game because I really like them and their athletic style. They play strong more so than fast.

If Suarez is allowed to play I'm not quite sure I can ever watch FIFA again, period, end of discussion. The corruption of international politics and economics is bad enough pill to swallow, but at least we had the game itself to enjoy? If they are politically and economically corrupt AND blatantly corrupting the game at a fundamental level that was just witnessed by literally BILLIONS of eyes and will be on constant GIF loop across Twitter for days??? That would be waving the white flag.

When an NBA ref who was involved in a crucial 2007 NBA playoff series that ended on some very controversial officiating to say the least (that is, euphemistically) subsequently plead guilty to fixing 54 NBA games and served 14 months in Federal prison in 2008, I stopped watching basketball entirely for 4 years, and really only begrudgingly embraced it again, albeit with the caveat of acknowledging that it all could be good fiction, but hey, I like novels and movies.

That being said, my brain can only handle one fictional sport at a time ;)

I don't think you need worry that if they can prove Suarez bit him he'll be banned probably for the rest of the tournament at least. There might be some problem proving it but I can't imagine what. There is corruption in football but I don't see this being the kind of decision it affects. Why would FIFA not want to ban him if they can prove it?

SuchFriendsAreDangerous 06.24.2014 05:06 PM

Fucking shit, so should I just stop wasting my time altogether by watching any of these fucking matches before injury time and just put it on at the 88th minute or fucking what!!

Ball don't lie, respect to Greece, Ivory Coast had their chance, but fucking shit it sucks.

SuchFriendsAreDangerous 06.24.2014 05:33 PM

To be sure, I don't disagree with the ref blowing a whistle on that last play, but I think giving a fucking DIRECT FREE FUCKING KICK was just plain wrong. Fuck that. Let the GAME decide itself, not the fucking refs!

Ivory Coast got robbed, but in the end, that is sport, you rob yourself when you give up chances to win on your own.. They didn't lose this match on that one play, they lost it by not scoring on any of their good looks or by letting Greece score that lucky fucking goal in the 1st half..

Also, for any of those who don't believe me when I say winning comes down to capitalizing on good luck as much as skill this match and the Portugal-USA match are exhibits A and B respectively ;)

demonrail666 06.24.2014 05:37 PM

Never watched the game but Greece qualifying, what a boring waste of a place.

SuchFriendsAreDangerous 06.24.2014 05:46 PM

Sighs.. fucking exactly. But hey, they are this World Cup's Cinderella err... Staxtopouta so it is what it is. I still totally think that was an absolutely atrocious officiating decision in granting the free kick. An indirect free kick Yeah, that was totally fair. But a fucking match deciding direct free kick? That fucking totally sucks, in fact, it really sucks even worse than allowing Suarez to vampire his way into the Knock Out round over Italy because at least Suarez is facing penalties, sanctions, or even long term banning meanwhile Ivory Coast has to go home to a war torn country breaking Africa's heart AGAIN..

Yeah, technically Algeria is still alive and indeed Ghana has a 50-50 shot to advance (which I'm dreading now) but this was still a complete kick in the balls to African futbol. While Greece is a great Cinderella story, Ivory Coast would have been not only an even better one, but also a better chance of beating Costa Rica. Well, now I hope Costa Rica gives Greece a good thrashing reality check ;)

!@#$%! 06.24.2014 06:16 PM

costa rica is absolutely positively the real cinderella this year. i'm impressed with that. didn't see their england game but 0-0 to secure their first place is a pretty fucking great result.

problem with ivory coast is that its best players (except for toure) are now washed out. and gervinho-- for everyone he scores, he fucks up 19.

i didn't see them play this game but i saw them vs colombia, and from what i've spied, ghana is the best african team this year--potent, just in a tough group. they stood up to germany like champs. oh, and there's the suprising france b team known as algeria (thanks for the fantasy points!) but i haven't really seen them play-- they did have an easy group though.

but anyway, be careful what you ask for-- maybe ghana beats the shit out of portugal and we get send home.

re: suarez, i spotted some ticker saying he might get 2 years or 24 games suspension-- but no discussion.

if colombia passes, costa rica-colombia should be amazing. pinto (the CR coach) is colombian, so he might have to commit seppuku so the narcos spare his family. shit! yes, this is a country where people have been killed for less. (watch "two escobars")

!@#$%! 06.24.2014 06:29 PM

points today:
buffon 7
chiellini 16(8) <--captain
arias 9

don't know if i should keep gaming my captain or settle for 16, seeing as how it already when down to 18 when i switched ramos.

for tomorrow i have di maria/higuain/ aguero. fucking argentinians! stop disappointing me.

i picked a bunch of bums this round.

demonrail666 06.24.2014 07:21 PM

DiMaria has been my biggest big money flop in my team. The best thing I can say about him is at least he starts.

!@#$%! 06.24.2014 08:01 PM

all my argentinians have been utter shit. except for messi and maybe romero--not on my squad.

i thought i was cleverly hedging the expected rain of goals between the three non-messis, who were all bound to get something at some point, but it's been a huge bunch of nothing.

Cinderellas are teams that really aren't supposed to be there but made it through, I think Costa Rica is real deal and they most definitely belong, meanwhile Greece got in on an overly aggressive ply by Ivory Coast.

Exactly why it was really now or never.. advancing would have helped motivate future talent to continue to work with the team.

Ghana is indeed doing the best, but on paper Ivory Coast is the better match up out of Africa, hence why that loss was borderline epic. Ivory Coast could have beaten Costa Rica and made things interestingly meanwhile Greece gets to make it even more interesting for Costa Rica since it should be an easy win for Costa Rica..

Oh, I was asking for Ivory Coast, not Ghana. No No No.. Ghana has had their fun at the US expense too long now..

isn't cinderella the servant girl filthy with ashes who with some magical help cleans up, shows up at the ball, and dazzles everyone?

that's definitely costa rica.

and pinto their fairy godmother.

because, really-- who the fuck knew about costa rica before june 12? sure, you say you did, but nobody else did though. people weren't even prepared for them.

apparently this is their 4th world cup. i don't remember their previous ones. i don't know that anyone does outside their own country. costa who? i only know them for their turtles and their papayas, their coffee and their lack of an army-- plus some stories.

when they beat uruguay it was like the laws of nature had been temporarily suspended in the universe. then they beat italy and everyone can see it wasn't a fluke. huge achievements. then they tie with england.

ivory coast is a better known team around the world-- they're back 3 times in a row, you expect some kind of performance. even without a great national record, people know drogba, yaya and kolo toure, gervinho, etc. -- those guys play (or have played) at the highest professional levels. they're all over the premiere league and league 1 and the bundesliga. that's a solid squad.

does costa rica have any famous player? i don't think so. they have some europeans, but from small leagues or teams. their best one works for arsenal but couldn't get a work permit so they loan him around, for fucks sakes. this is definitely the servant girl who cleans up and dazzles everyone at the ball.

re:ivory coast -- i read earlier today about drogba helping stop the war in his country-- damn! damn damn damn. and now they have floods, and a brother of the toures dies and they stay to play…. and in the end they get eliminated. fuck! one fucking disgrace after another. i feel really sad for them. i know what a national team victory can mean to a country. and i know you're very pro-africa, so--my condolences.

SuchFriendsAreDangerous 06.25.2014 12:02 AM

I think Costa Rica isn't as surprising as Greece. True, they aren't well known internationally, and maybe its my bias following CONCACAF, but they haven't surprised me one bit. They belong where they are and I wouldn't be surprised if they advance one more stage at that!

Greece, well by the universal sports definition of Cinderellas they are surely just happy to be there and unless some Prince Charming gift wraps them an easy win they're in way over their heads ;)

Ivory Coast.. thanks for your condolences.. It was the national narrative more than the sports narrative that would have made that win so damned perfect. They like Greece have never advanced, and like Greece it was only their 3rd appearance ever. While Greece may have had some fucked up economics lately, I think its unanimous that in the 21st century Ivory Coast has been one of the most tragic places in the world. In that regard, just MAKING it to the World Cup as been big for them but like you said they have a talented squad to there are also realistic expectations of advancing, though all things considering they will not be as disappointed as it might seem. However, advancing would have been EPIC to say the least...

SuchFriendsAreDangerous 06.25.2014 12:19 AM

By the way, I didn't know the Toure brothers brother died last week.. of CANCER no less... very very very very sad indeed! But sports are like real life in the sense that you have to take it on the chin sometimes but do it with grace and humility. So whether you lose a match or lose something big in life, all you can do is carry on forward. Ivory Coast team will definitely feel this sting, a lot more than most teams would, but on the same token, this is a team full of people whose perspectives are tempered by the wisdom of having experienced much worse than a big lose at futbol... That being said, they will be able to see a bright side more than they won't... It does suck being a last hoora, but on the same token, this roster can still through coaching and assisting help further develop Ivorian talent for the future, not merely of their national team, but of their futbol culture as a whole, and send more players to "the big leagues" around the world..

In that regard, all is not lost :)

SuchFriendsAreDangerous 06.25.2014 12:33 AM

on an unrelated note, this past weekends USA game was the most watched in American history.. though to be sure, it was on a Sunday evening and was against a team that in honesty is probably as popular among futbol fans living in America as the American team is!! This Thursday's match at Noon eastern time on a work day will not bode anywhere near as well TV audience share wise... To be sure its still impressive, it had the same ratings as the average NBA Finals game two weeks ago.

Indeed this has always been a big problem for the US team, Americans like their big games in prime time, and even for popular American pro-sports teams getting ratings at "odd times" like morning games is hard..

_tunic_ 06.25.2014 12:50 AM

I surely hope the USA will make it today, but it will be really tough
Good luck!! You'll need it....

Bertrand 06.25.2014 02:47 AM

Well, Greece hit the bar twice on quick counter attacks. Counter attacks that didn't look like one sole guy running as fast as he can with no support anywhere.
They haven't robbed the qualification that much.
Going through thanks to a late penalty was the surprise.

Their display when they became European Champions in 2004 was way more horrible.

_slavo_ 06.25.2014 04:45 AM

Suarez is a psychotic cunt.

I had much love for him (as a L'Pool superior striker) and the whole Uruguay team, but after what happened yesterday, I have lost all the respect for him and his team.

Plus the red card that shouldn't have been.

Unfair qualification to the elimination rounds.

Nefeli 06.25.2014 04:54 AM

i ll have my father to give me a short summary of whats going on, will connect the telly and will start watching too.

_slavo_ 06.25.2014 05:14 AM

you should - Greece is through! they played a very nice match yesterday.

Johnny "Magic Fingers" 06.25.2014 09:19 AM

Watching the local sports news, the accompanying caption to the story was:

SUAREZ'S LAST SUPPER?

More mirth ensued as the newsreader and sports guy exchanged banter about whether Suarez is a vegetarian and something about Italian Food....

(of course that image has been used to death, but I still find it funny... the resemblance is just striking)

What's bizarre is that he's done this twice before and has experienced the ensuing media backlash first in The Netherlands and then in England... and now he's chosen the biggest world stage to do it a third time and pretends like nothing has happened in that interview afterwards! Behaviour and denial that you would only expect from a 5 year old.

Don't they have some PR-person around the Uruguayan squad to prevent him from saying such dumb stuff? Why is Tabarez defending/excusing him? Why isn't it a big deal in the newspapers in Uruguay (supposedly they only mention it as an issue foreign media write about, even calling it a conspiracy). That's what I find most bizarre... not the biting itself.

demonrail666 06.25.2014 12:00 PM

Gutted for Aguero if his injury's serious but I don't think he's been fully fit since the beginning. Argentina look like they're starting to come together. Di Maria's been excellent and Messi, obviously. Don't remember Nigeria in their previous games but they're better than I expected.

pokkeherrie 06.25.2014 12:04 PM

A bit surprised I'm still leading in the SYG fantasy league. :)

After Netherlands-Chile I completely forgot to set Neymar as my captain for the Brazil game later that night and that costed me 16 points (assuming anyone who had him in the team made him captain).

Decided to gamble on Messi today... really didn't expect him to show up because a draw would suffice for both teams, but luckily he's proving me wrong. He could even do better than Neymar!

So it seems that both Neymar and Messi can carry their team when absolutely nothing is at stake. Just in time for the knock-out stage... the real stuff has yet to begin.

My 2nd round team:

GK Itanje 7
DF Vermaelen 3 (costed me points, took out Rodriguez for him)
DF Rojo 13
DF Ramos 8
DF Montazeri 8
MF Valbuena 11
MF Iniesta 8
MF Di Maria 8
FW Messi 10
FW Neymar 7
FW Benzema 32 (16x2)
