Anyway, discovering that I really never will master barre chords, I have to say that a RAT turned all the way up does a very good job of covering up a million and one inadequacies.

Well, the vast majority of metal bands use power chords, so if you can play those OK, you're halfway there. There's also the Magic Markers option, whereby you just turn everything up, throw the guitar around, scream and record the resulting mess.

I think the latter option might be EXACTLY what I'm looking for.

You could also do a Blixa Bargeld, in tuning your guitar to a dissonant chord, and then thrashing around on it whilst looking cool and German.
