Yeah. I crank that mutha everytime I need to put myself in a good mood.

The word "genius" gets thrown around a lot, but here's the real deal.

YES!!! it's like no matter how loud you crank it, it doesn't get distorted or muddy. such good production, it always sounds good no matter what volume.

i woke up with some of these songs in my head today and just had to hear it. love "i am singing" and "As" or all of side 4.

such an incredible album.

Queen - News of the World is another album i can't play loud enough. at least the first four songs.

My jaw dropped when I read the new album announcement. Admittedly I haven't been keeping up with any rumors or GYBE news lately, but that's mainly because I assumed - though I'm not sure why - that Allelujah! Don't Bend, Ascend! was going to be an isolated incident, and that they'd be focusing on touring and their other active projects for at least five years or so.

But naw, we got another new album on the way just one year after getting the next ASMZ record in years, and only a little over 2 years since their comeback won them a Polaris award.

I fucking love good surprises.

Though has anyone else noticed that the general attitude toward ...Don't Bend, Ascend! among (supposed) GY!BE lifers has cooled significantly since it dropped? The owner of the record store where I offer my number crunching services a few days a week claims it was a disappointment, roughly on par with a b-sides or rarities release, and easily their worst record.

I'm not sure I can agree with that.

Anyway, I'm stoked to see that their reunion wasn't as short lived as I thought it would be, and as a card carrying GY!BE OG, I'm pumped for this new joint as my father is for every new Springsteen album.

The world didn't really need Godspeed in 2012 like they did in 2000, but with all historical precedent pointing to a Republican White House in 2016 and an entirely red legislative branch, I think we're going to need a little anarchy in the record stores.

I'm abstaining from all early listening, though. At least for the time being. I want the new material to hit like a pile driver. And it's not as though they're a *singles* band. I will withhold listening until a complete version or live recording is released.

_tunic_ 02.26.2015 04:05 PM

well, the two main songs on the previous album were old tunes, they had played them live already during the last tour before the break-up (not that I ever saw them back then). And those other two short tracks I would often fast forward or simply skip.
And if you've seen them on the most recent tours, you'll recognise this new album as one song which then called BEHEMOTH. But on the album it's split up in four parts. I'm really looking forward to the new album, I loved to hear Behemoth live, which I did about six times (I lost count...)
Can't wait to hear how they recorded it for the album, love the sound of that soundcloud track, even though all I have with me until tomorrow is the crappy speakers of my laptop.

Constellation have some other fine releases this year, I'm also looking forward to the collaboration of Colin Stetson and Sarah Neufeld, which will be released around the same time as the gybe one..

I grew up with a father who only really LOVED two bands: The Beatles and Steely Dan, so I know there are some great moments in the band's history, but I honestly never thought I'd see them pop up on a Sonic Youth message board.

For what it's worth, Aja is as good as it gets. (Actually, scratch that- the best Steely Dan song is Kanye West's "Kid Charlemagne" sampling "Champion," but I digress) ... however, even my 60 year old father who follows them around like they were the grateful fucking dead, admits that they are the enemies of rock (though he insists they "really know how to roll," which may be the lamedt thing I've ever heard).

Anyway happy listening.

I'm not trying to be a dick. I have seen them myself... Back in the 2AN-era my dad caught a Sonic Youth show with me and I figured I owed him one. I'm mainly just making fun of my old man here. He spent even know why Steely Dan deserves respect. He doesn't appreciate the warped jazz meets jam band aesthetic. He just likes what he's always liked, and to hell with new stuff.

Itīs not a long time I listened Canīt Buy a Thrill. Itīs ok seventies-piece, but nothing really special. And didnīt give me any reason to listen them more...

gmku is old enough to be your father, I think. That may explain why.

Mortte Jousimo 02.27.2015 10:23 AM

There has been quite a long time I havenīt listened SY at all, just their solo works. Last week I have listened their live records from Spotify that I`ve never heard before. Also I burned myself cd where is Kali Yug, first peel session, b-sides & covers. Almost feel like I have found my favourite band again, theyīre so great!

I really hope not.

Severian 02.27.2015 06:13 PM

I've been listening to the new MCFERDOG, which is nice. Also catching up on some Black Acre releases I missed in 2014 (Clap! Clap!, Fantastic Mr. Fox) and trying out new and/or buzzy by Torche, Grooms, Jack Name, Siskiyou, and other new releases of note.

I'm getting really fucking into Torn Hawk. Not that most recent release that's supposed to sound so "mature," but the other stuff he dropped in '14, like Through Force of Will (specifically "Damage With Jeremy Irons")

Yup.

Are you thinking, if someone starts to listen some sixties or seventies band, he has to be old? I was nine years old and living in the eighties when I found Jimi Hendrix and other sixties & seventies stuff and have listened them since then. But maybe your stereotype is true these days, todayīs youth just canīt listen old music. How about soup nazi, is he as old as you & and I and gmku?

Severian 02.28.2015 07:48 PM

gmku would be a comically ancient SY fan if he was the same age as either of my parents. In fact, comical wouldn't even begin to describe it. His presence on this board would be downright suspicious. So I really hope Genteel's just being a prick. Or being hyper-technical... like, hypertechnically, I'm *conceivably* old enough to have a 21 year old, if I'd knocked someone up in the 6th grade.

But seriously, my heart goes out to gmku.

SuchFriendsAreDangerous 02.28.2015 11:34 PM

My pops likes Sonic Youth since like early 90s and he is old enough to be schizophrenicroom's grandpops (just don't tell his old ass i posted it ;) shit, i think Kim is old enough too!

Also, why can't i stop listening to this Now, Now record?? Its been 8monthes and i can still listen to it back to back to back in ways i could only listen to records when i was 14..
