^^ i think dexter started great—brilliant, really

then somewhere in the late seasons i got really fed up with it

not sure why but i think it wasn’t just me. did the writing take a dive? was there too much voiceover? something...

It turned into a slog for sure. After the season with the Trinity killer.
I actually never finished the finale. I watched the whole thing with the gf and we just grew increasingly exhausted with the whole fucking mess. So much so that we got 45 minutes into the hour-and-a-half-long final episode and just said fuck it.

Never been even tempted to finish that last episode. Don’t give a shit what happens.

I agree. And I remember precisely where it took a dive for me. Season 5.

MILD SPOILER (maybe). The end of Season 4 was such a great "Holy shit!" moment for me. Mostly in the sense of "How the hell are they going to handle this next season? Boy those writers sure have balls?!?! This is great television." Then, you know how they handled it? They fucking ignored it and all the issues that should have arisen for Dexter. They "solved" any of the major issues by simply shipping characters off, essentially writing them off, and basically ignoring anything else around the situation. Such a disappointing follow up season to what could have been some of the best television ever.

That is precisely where the show went to shit, imo.

Up to that point, I thought it was great.

Ya, I would agree with that so far with what I have seen.

I also saw something recently commenting on the next season being sort of a mashup or Murder House and Coven? Not sure what that meant even, but it still got me interested.

YES! The next season — “American Horror Story: Apocalypse” — is indeed going to include characters from both seasons, so... MORE COVEN!

I really hated Rape House on account of all the rape, like I said, but I suppose I need to finish the season now so I can make sense of what goes down with my favorite Witchy Women.

(Coven characters — at least one — make appearances in at least one other season too... I think the fifth?)

ETA: I still think they absolutely NEED to do a Cthulhu season if they’re trying to give a well-rounded summary of American horror tropes. Lovecraft is essential. It should be the last season, it should be called “American Horror Stort: INNSMOUTH,” and I already have a story that involves characters from season 3 and 5 that would work REALLY GODDAMN WELL.
Why don’t More television and film developers ask my opinion about shit?!

Watched the first two episodes of Who Is America last night. Man, I cringed so hard. I actually don't know how Cohen manages to keep a straight face through it all.

Fucking brilliant, it is.

since the lady is still on vacation i sorta sat with her for a bbc bunch of jane austen serials. some were okay, some were fucking dull, but thinking of austen as a writer was sort of the best part of it. all the stories are the same story. while in my ute i would have thought of her as a dull money-minded moralist, now having survived ages of debauchery and ruin i kinda think she was on to something. but then i think—the dialectic must continue forward, and it gets me thinking of how her morality supported shit like slavery in sugar plantations she nevered bothered to think about, worried only about who to marry and what their income was. virtuous wit? dull conformist? alcoholic? messiah?

watching a pre-world cup series called

FOOTBALL’S GREATEST MOMENTS

episode one is about world cup and dictators (brazil, argentina)

episode two is about england in 1990

episode three is about france 98: beckam, the real ronaldo, and zidane

episode four is “bring me the head of diego maradona”

it’s obviously a british production, but amazon in the u.s.a. has it listed as HISTORY OF SOCCER (false premise, boring title).

in any case, great little show. frequent guests so far include pelé, gary lineker, oscar ardiles, and a smattering of sports journalists. other guests are players and fans and specialists in their respective national teams. e.g., maradona’s agent, mario kempes, tostao and other mexico ’70 winners, survivors of torture, english players from their 1990 squad (who go back to present day italy to reminisce) etc.

really nice series so far! quite moving too at times. perfect football hiatus show since no real games today (prolly europa qualifier somewhere but i wouldn’t know)

Just finished it.

It’s a really good season.

Without spoilers, I can say it digs deeper into the injustices of the prison system, which took a back seat for a few seasons. I really liked it as well as the season immediately before it.

I'm holding off on OITNB until i'm firmly at my parents' place for some pet-sitting

Rob Instigator 08.06.2018 08:21 AM

tried Altered Carbon.

Got about half an episode in and my wife got bored. I was bored the whole time. Does it get better? Is it worth watching the whole season or is it just a disguised show about the troubles and hardships of sup\er wealthy white people? like nearly every other TV show?

!@#$%! 08.08.2018 09:13 PM

just started watching EAT RACE WIN on amazon

basically this chef on a food truck (2 trucks) follows the aussie team on the tour the france and while they race she feeds them. well “she”... ha ha ha. not alone. there are more cooks than cyclists i think.

looks tasty, yeah. good food. some nutrition learnin’ i expect to get down the line.

plus some hilarious (tragic) wipeouts lolol.

don’t watch while hungry!

YES

especially if you liked breaking bad, but not necessarily also

it’s much less ultraviolent—it’s about lies

Peterpuff 08.09.2018 09:54 AM

Better Call Saul is some of the best written television ever, imo. And filmed, for that matter. And edited. And acted. And...

It's just fucking brilliant, really. This creative group is top notch.

But yes, half the cleverness of it will be lost if you have not "learned" that world via Breaking Bad yet. Knowing who these characters are and what they become is half of what makes this show's storytelling and character development so good.

ilduclo 08.09.2018 01:07 PM

I didn't care for and only watched maybe 4 episodes of BB, but I like BCS
