The Longest Yard remake. It was alright and made me laugh at times, but wasn't a keeper

Sonic Youth 37 11.18.2008 01:55 AM

BRILLIANT

here's the first minute for you who haven't experienced:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=75JH3UbW1H8

but that-- kinda misses the point. watch it.

rohmer is a fucking genius. oh yeah, he still lives.

viewtiful_alan 11.18.2008 05:52 PM

House of Flying Daggers
7.5/10
Typical of these japanese martial arts driven movies: Awesome visually, story.. who gives a shit, its there so there's a reason for violent acrobatics.
The story wasn't necesarilly "bad" just unengaging.. but that, like I said, isn't really the point.
Alot of great to look at, bad ass parts. But, some of them were stupid in their execution or in how they looked.

it's a Hong Kong movie

I just saw Quantum of Solace - it sucked - avoid avoid avoid

Sonic Youth 37 11.18.2008 06:06 PM

The Woman In Green, another Sherlock Holmes film

mangajunky 11.18.2008 06:12 PM

I should explain why Quantum of Solace sucked -
it felt like an epilogue to Casino Royale, it was having trouble standing on its own. The action scenes were shaky as hell and difficult to follow. There was no sense of urgency.

The villain was stealing water from poor oppressed Bolivians. They were already poor and oppressed and this guy was stealing water from them - okay no offense to the poor and oppressed but geeze, in the scale of things WTF? Bond villains are supposed to be bigger than life. I only kind of felt like Bond was in danger and the fate of the world wasn't even close to being at stake. Oh yeah - the whole film is about Bond getting vengeance for Vesper dying in the last film, but half of the time you're forgetting that point because the movie is such a muddled mess.

So yeah - this film was awful and even more disappointing after the amazing Casino Royale.

davenotdead 11.18.2008 06:15 PM

yeah the moe i think about it, the more QOS was pretty lame after CR... i mean, i was entertained...

i guess its a 5.5/10

ha ha ha ha i dont know.

i thought it was longer.

it's a good movie if you like to read subtitles-- there is an endless reflection by the character about what's going on in the movie. #4 of rohmer's "six moral tales"-- fucking brilliant shit.

!@#$%! 11.18.2008 06:53 PM

and rob-- i'd recommend starting with rohmer's first two "moral tales", which establish the theme from which the motifs are spun off in successive films.

1) The Bakery Girl of Monceau

2) Suzanne's Career

These two are short movies, easily watched. Both in black and white. Issued in a box set by Criterion a couple of years ago with the other 4 movies, and readily available via Netflix.

atsonicpark 11.19.2008 10:55 PM

ab-normal beauty - 7/10

Beautiful and at times disturbing atmospheric film that's very rarely brilliant but always fun to look at.

dressed to kill - 8/10

Brian DePalma rules... well, usually.

a boy and his dog - 6/10

Very odd apocalyptic film starring a dog.

Rob Instigator 11.20.2008 09:55 AM

a dog and DON JOHNSON!

don johnson's HEARTBEAT. worse that eddie murphy's party all the time (and check out DWEEZIL ZAPPA, fucking loser fuck)

Bedazzled - Dudley Moore and Peter Cooke - entertaining - fun - better than that shiite remake.

Kegmama 11.20.2008 03:37 PM

AGAIN. Love this movie, DUDE.

uhler 11.20.2008 03:45 PM

mangajunky 11.21.2008 10:09 AM

jon boy 11.23.2008 02:59 PM

shortbus, thats a hell of a thing.

atsonicpark 11.23.2008 05:08 PM

Lloyd's the man. I've talked to him in person twice, at length... he touched my girlfriend's boobs and I didn't care.

phoenix 11.23.2008 08:08 PM

I was made to watch teeth with one of my friends. I walked out of my own living room about 40 mins in. so many other things to be wasting my time on!

atsonicpark 11.23.2008 08:10 PM

Teeth's amazing. What a great film. I was totally shocked by how good it was. Was expecting a silly horror comedy, but it ended up being a serious.. and scary!... horror treat. Took itself way too seriously (which I liked)... but it was surreal and I never knew where it was going. Loved it.

viewtiful_alan 11.23.2008 08:29 PM

Oh come on, teeth was just crap. Crap you had to laugh at. Its a great time drunk.

I watched Iron man again last night cuz my parents wanted to see it.
9/10

atsonicpark 11.23.2008 08:42 PM

Haha. You call Teeth crap and then give Iron Man a 9/10 (which, in my book, means you almost find it to be PERFECT)? I don't need to say anything else!

...I'm only kidding, I don't care in the least what people like or dislike. I just disagree wholeheatedly in this case.

ha ha ha ha
well he's your "gay uncle" (or at least that's what i saw he signed in one of his autographs), or maybe he was just feeling her up?

have you seen poultrygeist yet? holy fuck i laughed so hard...

the girl from it kinda looks like the pictures of your girlfriend you posted (kinda-- similar... head shape? hard to explain). maybe she's his type or something. anyway...

re: teeth, i missed it when it was in town, my friends loved it-- gotta catch it at some point but tiny tv doesnt beat the big screen.

atsonicpark 11.23.2008 08:52 PM

teeth's on instant watch on n-flix, I think 123451. Well, it might not be now, it was when I saw it though..

And yeah Poultrygeist was actually pretty brilliant, though I wasn't that excited for it or about it.. the concept always seemed kinda stupid.. but admittingly it was really good.. the songs were great.

!@#$%! 11.23.2008 08:58 PM

it's my first troma movie (hard to believe, my wife is a toxic avenger fan), so it took me totally by surprise and holy fuck, it blew my mind-- it's kinda like what john waters would be making if he hadn't gone corporate. well its not my first troma film exactly cuz i had started the first turn on on instant netflix, but got distracted, but this was the full-blown experience on the 3rd row from the big screen. shit, the jokes kept coming one after another, i was fucking out of control, and yeah, the songs, i was gonna cringe, but then no, it was pure gold. and thanks for the teeth news, i'll search it, though im on a rohmer kick at the moment in the home dvd front...

atsonicpark 11.23.2008 09:02 PM

See, that's the thing, I've seen probably well over 100 Troma films (I just sold/gave away about 30 of the ones I own actually) so it didn't really excite me, but I can see how it would blow people's minds. I felt bad for not being more excited about it, but it didn't seem like anything new to me except for the songs (which was a concept Lloyd admittingly took from Happiness of the Katakuris -- though the songs were still quite brilliant). It's still brilliant though. Glad you enjoyed it. Almost every Troma film is on instant watch too, btw, haha.

My favorite Troma films are Combat Shock, Class of Nuke'Em High, Period Piece, Touch Me in the Morning, Trailer Town, Unspeakable (NOT the Dennis Hopper one), Surf Nazis Must die, Fatty Drives the Bus, Citizen Toxie, Bloodsucking Freaks, and Maniac Nurses Find Ecstacy.

atsonicpark 11.23.2008 09:05 PM

hahaha. no prob.

barnaclelapse 11.23.2008 11:42 PM

The Unbearable Lightness of Being.

I...didn't like it as much as I thought I would, though the cinematography was outstanding.

I'd probably give the whole thing a 3/5.

Are you Kidding??? TEETH was brilliant.

atsonicpark 11.24.2008 08:16 AM

She has to be kidding. I think she said she didn't like Happiness before, too -- one of the best films ever made.
